I was just watching Enter the dragon starring Bruce Lee and it struck me that he could have been actually fighting with a Wolverine type villian? The movie appeared a year before Hulk 181 so could Han have "snikted" first?

Claws like this, in Wolverine's case, emanating from the backhand, go back thousands of years, in one form or another. Either strapped to the back of the fingers/wrist/forearm, worn on a glove or gauntlet, or like brass knuckles/knuckle dusters. Ninjas, gladiators, etc., etc, it wasn't that uncommon a weapon. It's Wolverine's almost indestructible skeleton and healing powers that you'd have to include, along with the claws, in tracing his true historical origins/inspirations, if there is a precedent.

Aha! You're quite right how about this one Captain Sinbad (1963) starring Guy Williams, the villain is indestructable because his heart is locked in a tower and of course it is guarded by a giant claw fist.

:applause:  That's a fun movie and a cool book...beautifully illustrated in high style by the great  Russ Manning!

This would be something only Roy Thomas (editor in chief of Marvel at the time) would know. He's the one who decided he wanted a wolverine or badger type character.

That is impressively metal-looking. 70s / 80s album cover material.

:roflmao: The Badger! I wonder would he have caught on as a character?

You possibly know that there was a Copper Age character called The Badger? He had his own book.

There was also a 90s character called The Ferret, now faded into obscurity.  In this case I believe location was the problem, as, if he had been marketed to northern England, he would’ve been hugely popular.
