Stan Lee RIP 14 14

I was able to meet Stan Lee at Toronto Fan Ex several years ago...Ugh...Nearly a decade now (wow), Toronto Fan Ex 2010...

I waited in line for hours, then had to be re-booked for a second try due to the overwhelming number of people who wanted a photo op.  I toughed it out and got my spot for the second try. Even though I only had time to exchange a few brief words with him, it was worth it. I also got to sit in on a panel where he talked about his life and work...This was back when he was healthy and vibrant, so it was a great experience and one I hope to be able to remember for a very long time.

Stan Lee, the accidental pioneer, who, when he'd thought he'd rode the horse long enough and was about to chuck it all, he took the advice of his wife to write something the way he'd like to write it, telling him if he was going to quit anyway, what did he have to lose, and when he did...… the world was changed.

RIP Stan. You broke the 4th wall and allowed your fans to not only connect with the characters, but to the creator's as well.

My dad's first hero comic was AF15 back in 1962 when he was 17. He's 73 now and Stan Lee has been a part of our life since then.

I remember learning to read as a 4 year old with Marvel comics and my dad telling me who he was.

Lost for word, everyone knew this day was coming sooner then later but it's still a shock.... sad day... RIP Stan The Man Lee. Thank you for everything!

RIP to the man, Stan Lee. I was glad to had met him in Calgary two years ago, he had signed my book. I had enjoyed his writings in many classic comic stories. It is a sad day today for me.

At 95 yrs old God Bless and God speed Stan we will always read and cherish the books you wrote. Some will take advantage on the bay but we the true believers remember what comics are all about.

There is no way to put into words what this man has meant to literally billions of children. Any kid who slept on Spider-man sheets, pretended to turn into the Hulk when their siblings ticked them off or as an 8 year old that we were just one radiation exposure away from being a X -men member, this is a tremendous loss. Stan Lee was a champion for comic books when it was "embarrassing" to admit you read, drew or wrote comic books. His creations have forever changed the world in ways that he could never have predicted. He brought a humanity to super heroes that was lacking and he made heroes seem relatable. He brought drama that was familiar to all of us....His imagination is there with the likes of Spielberg, Henson, Lucas, Jobs and Picasso. He is one of the most important persons of the 20th century. His legacy will forever be remembered and never duplicated....

Amen. His legacy is Olympian. 

I however believe his creative genius FAR exceeds the others you placed on the list, save for Picasso, and that is a bit apples-to-oranges. However credit is apportioned with his co-creators (and will we ever know?) from the Marvel process, Stan's pantheon trumps the rest of them. Spielberg wrote few of the screenplays for the pictures he is known for (I believe he wrote "Close Encounters" but not E.T. nor "Raiders"). Lucas' legacy, as much as I myself enjoyed it as it unfolded, is way too derivative (I'm being kind here) to be mentioned in the same breath as Lee. Jobs, like Zuckerberg, mostly took other people's ideas and ran with them.  All influential, yes, but Lee exceeded them all both in terms of creative output and the cultural legacy thereof. 

Like Lee and Kirby (or Lee and Ditko), the credit for other stalwarts like Superman and Batman is similarly divided, but Seigel, Schuster, Kane, Finger, et al. conspired to create singular icons. Superman is more a discontinuity than Batman, admittedly, the latter being very derivative (ex. pulp characters Black Bat and Shadow), so in my mind he looms larger. Sure, upon their debut, the Fantastic Four vaguely resemble the Challengers, but things in their universe quickly veered cosmic and far beyond any team book - or comic book - before it. The same can be said of most of the other Marvel brood. Curiously, there are prototypes for characters such as Ant-Man and Iron Man, but even the prototypes themselves were penned by Stan's great hand in those pre-hero Atlas and Marvel offerings!

Point is, he was a creative giant almost without peer, and I don't believe that his legacy is yet fully appreciated.
