Atlas Marvel Boy & Astonishing Books 0

I was a Quasar fan when those books were on the newsstands, and I remember one year I got that Marvel coffee table hadcover with Spider-Man on the dustjacket. That book had several reprints in the back of it, including Marvel Boy and that's when I discovered the Golden Age connections to Quasar. A Golden Age "Marvel Boy" set (comprised of Marvel Boy #'s 1 & 2, and Astonishing #'s 3-6) is a tough set to build as it is.

I'd say that although there may be MCU relevance as it goes more cosmic in coming years, that these books were real "love of the hobby and of the particular material" for me. I would say that these are relevant for Quasar or Captain Marvel collectors (P of the U guys, cmon!) the way that Tales of Suspense #16 is for Iron Man collectors, although more interestingly there are serious continuity strands that remain to this day for the Marvel Boy books.  Here is a very humble Atlas era Marvel Boy set....

Marvel Boy #1 (12/1950) | F-/5.5 | Golden Age Marvel, 1st appearance of Marvel Boy (Quasar prototype), 1st appearance of Quantum Bands (Uranian Wrist Bands), 1st appearance of Uranian Eternals. Early Stan Lee work. Sleeved in Mylar2 with halfback and two sheets of mircochamber paper.

Marvel Boy #2 (02/1951) | VF-/7.5. Golden Age Marvel, 2nd appearance of Marvel Boy. 2nd appearance of the Quantum Bands (Quasar). Sleeved in Mylar2 with halfback and two sheets of mircochamber paper.

Astonishing #3 (04/1951) | Good+/2.5 | Gold Age Marvel, 1st Satanians, 3rd Marvel Boy. Sleeved in Mylar2 with halfback and two sheets of mircochamber paper.

Astonishing #4 (06/1951) | VG/G/3.0 | Gold Age Marvel, 1st Madame La Morte. Early Uranian Eternals. Sleeved in Mylar2 with halfback and two sheets of mircochamber paper.

Astonishing #5 (05/1951) | VG-/3.5 |Gold Age Marvel, 1st Orion Rex & Serpent. Early Uranian Eternals and Uranian Criminals. Sleeved in Mylar2 with halfback and two sheets of mircochamber paper.

Astonishing #6 (10/1951) | VG/4.0 |Gold Age Marvel, 1st Pasha Emit Erut & Eve Namada, Vampire, Magic Pen. Final Golden Age Marvel Boy. Sleeved in Mylar2 with halfback and two sheets of mircochamber paper.

Awesome set @IMJ.  I completed that run too a while back.  I had to get two #4s because of the GLOD (analness, on my part) I also added a different Marvel Boy with the Daring Mystery and would love to complete it with a USA #7 which I think is the only other GA appearance of the first Marvel Boy but that book has eluded and is pricey.

Awesome set, Telerites! Your copy of Daring Mystery Comics is just great!  Although my set was designed to support a Quasar collection and so I don't think I'd pursue earlier incarnations of any character using the Marvel Boy name though.

Those Astonishing's, especially your 4, 5 & 6 are really nice! Eventually I'll have to upgrade to nicer mid-grade copies like that, but I think a lot of people under estimate how hard it is to build this set. I think there might be 3 copies of Marvel Boy #1 on eBay at the moment, but each one has some kind of really serious flaw, and they have resided there for some time now.

Astonishing 3 and 4 are two of y favorite Everett covers ever and he had some great ones.  The Daring Mystery is from the Chicorel Collection.

 I only have about half of those issues. This is by far my best one.

I do like that Astonishing 4 cover.  It fits in with the horror theme better than superheroes.

I know we are side-tracking the OP thread but I totally agree, Richard.  The art is incredible.  So many great artists we don't talk about enough.  I, too, have copies of both but then who doesn't 

@IMJ sorry for the side-track.  I meant to ask earlier if you plan on getting any or all of yours graded ? Some nice books that appear very solid grades.

It's no problem at all - there are some great books being posted here! I have a modest slab collection of a few hundred books, but it's unlikely that these will be joining them. I'd assume finding higher grade copies of this set in the 7.5 - 9.0 range for slabbing. Eventually I would definitely like to upgrade my copies - the 7.0+ Astonishing books finding their way in to this thread are amazing!
