I noticed he still had some covers and interiors on that site. If I had the opportunity to choose from the entire catalog of his work on the title it would have been the cover I wound up getting, so I passed on everything else.

This one is pretty badass too. If you like the Maestro character.

This is the only one I own. It had none of the slightly off facial expressions or references that turned me off to his art. Also, the character of Maestro is a favorite and I own a few of the covers by other artists from this series.

No scan on my work computer so I'll just post the published piece...

Ah, so that is where it ended up going. I took a very long look at this one when it came out. I agree that this is probably the piece to get from the arc and I nearly pulled the trigger as well. Congrats on a nice piece.

I am of a similar mindset as some have mentioned here – I don’t like the idea that GL has such a reputation for photo-referencing for his artwork … but not so much that I have written him off as an artist from whom I would consider adding their art to my collection. The DPS on fanfare is also nice and I gave it some consideration. The recent Heritage Auction had a nice Planet Hulk cover that was appealing but I had more interest in other pieces so I decided not to bid.

Also it is worth noting that he is 62 and still finds work pretty regularly. Must be doing something right . Not an easy task in the world of comics unless your name carries some weight.

I always thought older artist and writers should ban together and create an All-Star team of seniors. So many cast aways from the 70's and 80's. Ordway talks about still having great stories to tell but having trouble finding work because of his age. It's a shame.

I doubt it. I think his stuff will go up in estimation down the road. I mean, there are some highly collectable bronze age artists (*cough* Rich Buckler *cough*) who had a reputation for really blatant swiping back in the day, who nobody thinks twice about now. And many comic book artists based their character drawings on real people. This isn't new.

How many people ever looked at a Rich Buckler piece and recognized instantly that, "oh, yeah, that was swiped from a porno/SI swimsuit issue/lingerie catalog"? (shrug)

I have to imagine his... technique... makes it easier to meet deadlines.

I share the dislike of some features of his art, in particular grinning female characters in the middle of atrocious fights.  But this cover absolutely won me over and I am really pleased to have it.

And the comic itself is quite good!

I had a Land X-men page that I sold because I could never get over the weird grinning/laughing female in a battle.

I do like this page sequence from Ultimate Power and am happy to have it in my collection.

Seems like the general consensus in the thread is 'He's *ok*, but here's my one example that's really outstanding'

I too pondered picking this cover up and passed based on Land's reputation. However, there is a little regret cause this is an awesome cover and the aforementioned isn't applicable as you stated.

My experience with Land is interesting.

I left comics when Bagley jump into Spider-man with the Carnage garbage in the early 90’s
and come back with Identity Crisis by Meltzer and Morales 14 years later.

I was hook and surprised that good stories with great art was a reality…
then I discover Daredevil by Quesada and the Ultimate Universe
among them the Ultimate Fantastic Four
and then the team of Millar / Land jump on board on number # 21
That was a Huge Game Changer for me
Millar is one of the Greatest comic book writers
and Land realistic and beautiful art made one of the best run ever.

It was serendipity right time right writer right artist…

That is why I am so happy to own this page…

I agree with this statement, but it brings to mind a question: why do so many Star Wars artists get a pass when they do the same?

Does anyone know Greg Land's dealer or how to contact him?  Thanks.

Tom at Fanfare used to be his rep, but retired a few months back. You could try and get in touch with him (through the old site) and see if he has any contact info for Greg.

I spoke with Greg at Heroes back in June and at that point he hadn't decided what his next move would be regarding sales.

I think that's probably because when people pick up a Star Wars book they want to see the characters look like they did in the film, they like familiar poses, expressions, and anything else remotely nostalgic or familiar because the comic has several films as a basis with real life actors playing the roles.

Now, if those Star Wars artists drew Han Solo using Stone Cold Steve Austin as his model/reference, or Princess Leia using Jenna Jameson porn screen caps for her face I would expect some outcry.
