The omnibus version (12 volumes i think, 600 or so pages each) are still only 5x7 sized! Problem with the omnibuses is after the first few volumes they're all way OOP and run about $50 each to pick them up on the secondary market. Meanwhile i got the first 15 volumes of the Pocket editions for $30!

Holy cats, that’s a screaming good deal! Well, however it’s served, it’s a great run of stories for sure. Big fan of the movies as well!

Not HCs but im sure the shelfporn lovers will appreciate that my 15 volumes of the Pocket editions of Lone Wolf and Cub lined up perfectly in width on top of my 20 volumes of Bakuman manga.

Very impressive.

It does make me think about how much shelf space would be required for physical copies of my large digital manga collection, courtesy of Kodansha / Humble Bundle.

Every volume of Battle Angel Alita, for example.

Thanks for the heads up. I did not know that. Checked on Amazon and there they are.

still, based on the length of the volumes, they could combine into one omni.

it was not mainstream but I loved the series.

Totally agree. I still have the complete  V1 in a long box.

They have TPBs.

The first series What If? trades are quite nice.  Difficult to imagine there’d be anything more done in terms of remastering for an omnibus.

Great reading there!

I passed on Peter David Hulk V1 (and V2) and now I’m kicking myself. I remember reading the seminal Hulk run as a monthly subscription.

Indeed, if they've already cleaned up the files for the trades, there's a good chance we'll get an omni at some point. That seems to be Marvel's method: clean up for a Masterworks or an Epic trade, then eventually compile them all into an omnibus. If we're getting Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe in an omnibus, What If seems like a shoo-in.

Personally, I love What if. When I was a grade school kid, I was staying the weekend with my best friend, and his dad took us to the comic shop. That was the first time I'd ever been to a comic shop, and it BLEW MY MIND. My buddy bought a copy of What if V1 #29 (What if the Avengers Defeated Everybody?) and I was fascinated with it. Eventually got him to trade it to me after he read it, and I still have it, one of the few original childhood comics I still own. Later I started reading What if v2 when it was being published. I was once again at the same friend's house, and he had What if V2 #6 (What if the X-Men Lost Inferno). I've told that story a few times here, but the short version is I had to have my own copy, so I talked my folks into stopping by the convenience store on the way home so I could grab one. I read it over and over, and for the first time wrote a letter, which they published a couple of issues later. Since then I've gotten that issue signed by Ron Lim (another one of the few original childhood comics in my collection) and finally secured my grail, an original page from the book. WHAT IF RULES!

Anyway, I love both volumes, and hope we get a HC one day. If not, I may have to break down and buy those trades. So many great stories, and so much superhero carnage!

What’s everyone’s favourite What If Story?

I have three that come to mind:

https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/What_If%3F_Vol_1_42 (Invisible Girl)

https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/What_If%3F_Vol_1_27 (Phoenix)

What if Phoenix had lived, blew me away as a kid! Wolverine and crew were decimated. I've been collecting the trade paperbacks until a better collection comes out. I also liked Conan and Shang-Chi issue. I really liked most of them.

Both of you have covered favourites already.

Others I like are...

issue 3's 'What If The Avengers had never been?', with some very nice Kane / Janson art as well

issue 20's "What If The Avengers had fought the Kree-Skrull War without Rick Jones?'

issue 36's 'What If The FF had not gained their superpowers?' (basically, they become The Challengers)

Also, issue 34, second series 'What if The Punisher was a Hall Monitor?'

Some of the Spidey stories were pretty good too!

I for sure am going to preorder FF Vol 2 & 3 but undecided on Vol 4.

Wow. I waited forever for a vol. 4.. I'll be all over that. Even though I already picked up most of the masterworks. I already have and read 1 to 3 years ago.

I wonder how quickly they'll move beyond vol. 4. Hard to believe there's very little of the bronze age that hasn't been reprinted yet. My sweet spot is early to late 70s. And that's almost all covered.

I'm still waiting on original marvel horror anthologies (Tower of Shadows and Chamber of Darkness, for example).

Masterworks is even coming out with Brother Voodoo -- now that's obscure.

Those are great choices! These are my three, based almost entirely upon nostalgia I described above, but I think they're all pretty solid stories too!
