This is what's defined as a 'key' book these days?  Yeesh!

Oh didn't you hear? There are over 14,000 keys now

The criterion is plentiful ~

On a side note: X-Men #139 is a stunning book, not to mention coupled with the Byrne/Claremont run.

As the community and popularity has grown, so have the amount of keys.  Not everyone can afford what you or I may think as keys so therefore cheaper books become keys for those who can chase after them for whatever reason it is considered a key to them; 1st app, cover, story, variant, etc.

So, the collecting community hasn’t grown. It’s been shrinking for the better part of the past two decades.

those that still collect and are trying to complete runs of long-standing titles (i.e Action Comics) are few and far between as the # of issues + cost is prohibitive.

thus, folks started to shift their preferences towards collecting only ‘keys’, but real keys such as AF 15, Showcase 22, etc.

Once those prices spiked due to increased demand, folks searched for the next (lower tier) of keys such as ASM 50, GL 76 or HOS 92.

Once again, prices spiked and folks searched for  minor keys that were more affordable such as All Star Comics 58, Marvel Special Edition 15, etc.

Tagging affordable comics as ‘keys’ has become so commonplace these days that the term ‘key’ has lost all meaning.  It is a modern day misnomer.

Are we sure about this?  Record breaking prices, sales holding strong through Covid-19 and a billion dollars in comic sales from 2018?

If the market and community deems 1st app of Shang Chi as a key, then isn't it a key?  Its not an AF15 but then again, how many books are?

At the end of the day, what is a key is a personal opinion for each collector.  To each their own.

1st Shang Chi is not a key.  It is the 1st appearance of a character that has been announced for movie treatment.

nobody (well, hardly anyone) gave a ratz @$$ about Shang Chi before the movie announcement

At what point does it become a key?  When you decide, the market decides or an individual collector decides?

And no, I wouldn't compare FF48 to MSE15.  FF48 introduced a wider cosmic base to Marvel with 2 characters that have had characters with their own impact on the larger Marvel Universe.
I don't know of many people out buying MSE15 before the movie announcement.

Still, I think a book can eventually become a key.  It's not like being a key is so set in stone.  FF52 would be a better example.  Sure he's had his own comics but wasn't as big as it is now.

Again, I don’t see the 1st appearance of Beta Ray Bill as a key, before, during, or after the movie hype fades away
