Looks like Suspense Comics 8 may be the next book getting this treatment...just notice this sale from a few weeks ago.  Apparent VG $2,640.  Just three short years ago the Crippen 6.5 went for $2,150.  Will be interesting to see what the next blue label goes for at auction, though who knows how long it'll be..

I agree...I think there’s been Stratospheric growth for the new classics for the last several years and it was only a matter of time till people circled back around  to the original classics.

Sure, tons of room to get higher.  Don't forget to throw in the STARTLING TERROR TALES #11, the other classic Spider cover. :D

Here is a picture of a Mask #1 that I own. I don't own many restored books but when it comes to Mask #1 I'm happy to get my hands on whatever I can!

Beautiful copy, congrats! Like you said, just to have one is an accomplishment! :applause:

Wow.

Mask 1 is great, but it ain't that great.

Oh yes it is!! Clearly.

Mask 1&2 have been creeping up in value over the past years. Most of those sales have been private tho, so it's been hard to keep track.

The CC auction closing at over $13k is an updated display of the current market is for these pretty rare books. Always highly desired and hard to find, when they hit the market, there's a bit of a frenzy that spikes the value.

6.0 for these books particular books is high grade considering the highest universal is 7.5 in the census.

I'm willing to bet that these have quite a bit of room still.. especially if an unrestored 8.0 or higher shows up.

I know about the sales record, and I am clearly a fan since I own both a 1&2. That said, I think $5000-6000 for heavily restored midgrades or $2500 for 0.5 beaters is too much relative to what else you can get for that money.

Obviously just my opinion though. The market very clearly disagrees with me!

I think people see the insane price of a grade like 0.5 and figure $5,000 for a nice restored is a bargain.

I may be mistaken, but the recent 0.5 on ComicLink is the same copy from several months back, and was offered for a time on eBay. If so, I believe he sold it for a loss in the recent auction, so perhaps there was some buyer’s remorse.

But I digress. I agree with October. If I had $2500 or more to spend, it would not be on a book that looks like someone put it in a blender, no matter how bad I wanted that particular book. There are still so many other great, mid to high grade books I could get for that amount.

The recent sale of a 0.5 on CL was a different book than the earlier 0.5 on CL.  The first copy had the brittle page designation, and went for more than the copy that sold a couple weeks back with OW pages.

I think a lot of this has to do with some pretty clever auction strategy, filtering in one book at a time.  It strikes me as a case of people mistaking rarity for availability.  There are plenty of these books left around, just nobody wants to sell them.  It isn't all that rare.

It's not rare, but it's pretty tough in unrestored 5.0 or above. I actually thought the Ohio copy went relatively cheap. Less than a 3x multiple between a heavily restored midgrade and a pedigree blue label midgrade?!?

I'd take the $14k for the Ohio every day over a restored copy at $6k.

I agree completely, which is why I think it's just savvy operation by the auction houses.  Controlling availability gives them the ability to influence perception of rarity.

Not really sure how anyone can control availability.  Anyone can send their book in to CGC and then use any number of channels (big auction house, ebay, Boards, dealers) to sell it. (shrug)

I could be way off base, no doubt.  If I were in charge of an auction house, I would make sure that I wasn't listing books on top of each other.  If you sent me a Mask 1 & 2, and Andy sent me another set, I'd try to sell them in different auctions.  It can make a prospective buyer ask themselves, "When will I ever see another for sale?  I better go all out," not knowing there are 2 more copies set to auction in the next 90 days.

It's the conspiracy theory lover in me. hm
