Jump forward to around 2012 and 7.0-7.5s were ok. Today I’m happy with 3 to 6.5s depending on the book. Prices keep rising but I want to keep collecting. I too love those books in this range which present really well but have one major flaw. Of course, price and availability lead to me owning some books above and below this range. I actually look for presentability in a book (which may vary from collector to collector) but since I am a completist, at times, I take what I can find sine many a GA book doesn't come around too often. Popular Post sagii Posted March 2, 2019 Popular Post Share Posted March 2, 2019 While i'm always stoked to score 6.5 (the entry bar for high grade for GA in my eye) or better, i adore my nice presenting 4.0 to 5.0 books. I think most of my slabbed GA falls in to those grades. I do however buy 3.5 and under, mostly for tough books (now or never), 'hot' books (get a bargain now, profit if i sell later) and keys (unattainable otherwise in HG). Case in point, the lowest graded slabbed book in my collection. First appearance of Mr. Justice. I got beat out on this book in higher grades many times. When this beautiful 2.0 came up, i couldn't resist, and i feel i got it for a 'steal'. Flaws were on the back. If i were to own a high grade book, I'd be terrified of messing up one of the few copies in that condition. A nice looking 2.0 is the sweet spot for me. I learned about GA from a low grade collector so that's where I started, but I'd say 4.0 is the grade I look for when I want to upgrade. With that being said, my books just vary, because I'd rather have a copy of a book I like, rather than none at all. Spine splits don't bother me in slabs,but they do in raw books because I'm afraid I'll make them bigger when I look through the book and I shy away from anything brittle or tan. Since I bought a CR book last year that turned out to have all the pages split once the case was opened, I a little hesitant about those as well. BarristerBaker Posted March 3, 2019 Share Posted March 3, 2019 Cut-off for me, largely, is 5.0. For keys, I try to stay 5.0-6.5 (have dipped below a couple times). I might like 5.5, specifically, there the most. Once you hit grade, you can jump quite a bit in price, depending on the book. 5.5s are great value for bigger books. I like to put together runs and look for higher grade stuff (7.5 and up) for “regular” parts of a run. Generally, however, 5.0 is my floor.
