I need help - found early 90's Comic Collection, not sure what to do

Hello,

I was cleaning out my garage this weekend and I found a box full of comic books from the early 90's, and they are all in sealed protective bags, never been opened(no fingerprints) or read before. I inspected all of them the past couple days, the corners are perfect, the spines(which is a new term I discovered yesterday) are all great, no issues at all with covers, but I am just not sure what do with them. They are a collection that I was given brand new in the early 90's that I completely forgot about but now that I am trying to make extra room in my garage I just realized what I had. Yesterday I went to an authorized CGC servicer which I found on this website, and I took my top 50 in value(based on GPA), and he estimated they would all receive very high grades as they are in mint condition. They were two he recommended for pressing, which I am not even sure what that is, but it will help take care of a couple minor things that I would have never noticed. I am just not sure what to do, I am open to selling the collection as is, but he did mention grading which does have an upfront cost and has a better resale value. Any input would be greatly appreciated as I do not plan to hold onto these books. Thank you for your help!

Hello and Welcome!!!

Just my opinion as a 40 year collector, not a seller...

eBay requires a lot of time and work, you have to list, package, ship and deal with people trying to get over on you.

From what I can see the ASM 361/362/363 are the only books of any value and that is "right now" due to a supposed movie appearance and there are ton's for sale on eBay right now, most being sold as a lots.

Current eBay auction sales show ASM 361 raw VF/NM 9.0 selling for about $75.00 while a CGC NM+ 9.6 sold for $186.00 and a CGC NM 9.4 sold for $154.00, factoring in the cost to grade is there any real profit there in grading for a quick sale?

IMO if these books do not really mean anything to you and you are just looking to get rid of them check with your LCS, you may only get pennies on the dollar but it would be quick and easy or a yard sale, etc.

Or as was already stated...

"Why not sell them to the CGC guy?"

You can send them to get stabbed, wait six months and lay out two grand to discover 90% of them will sell for less than you "invested" in them.

Or you can sell the whole box and look at it as finding two Ben Franklin's instead of the box.

My honest suggestion:

Sell the Amazing Spider-Man issues for around $100-120

Sell the Spawn issues for around $20-30

Sell the Venom Lethal Protector issues for $25-30

Sell the Deadpool issues for $5

The rest would be a waste of time to get graded and are tough sells at even a $1.00

If someone offered me $150-200 for the bunch, I would take it as a seller. You could try to grade the 361 but even then, you are only likely to make a fair bit more if you get a 9.6-9.8 grade which is a gamble.

Thank you for all your input. Honestly, I would like to sell them as a lot. I've done a little research and it appears there is about an upfront cost of $300-400 if I wanted to grade the top 10 comics of the group, hope for a high grade. I could break even, I could make or even lose money, nothing is guaranteed. But in the end, I am not in this to make a profit, I am not a comic collector or seller, a fair market value offer would be fine for me. Who is this "CGC Guy" as mentioned above?

You mentioned bringing them to an "authorized CGC servicer", he should know the guy they are talking about.

Got it, yes, I only went just to get an evaluation of the comics. I did not really think to offer them for sale right away to him, but I that will definitely be an option.

Being a dummy, I will offer you $500.00, plus shipping for the whole lot.

That's actually a very good offer. 2-3 years ago, that would have been a laughably high offer, but now...eh, not so much. There is a LOT of drek in here. A LOT. BUT...there are some gems, so if your offer's legit, I would encourage PleaseHelp to take it.
