Named and depicted appeared in November 1974 Marvels, prior to Hulk 181 being published? I'm looking at Daredevil 115, which contains the ad. I have every Marvel book from that month, and can determine how many of the issues have the ad if it's potentially of any significance. Thoughts?

Marvel Premiere #19

Zero significance. They're house ads, and all of them came out after Hulk #180.

Agreed. But for some reason, people still pay a slight premium for the books with the ads, as I discovered when searching pricing results for Thor 229 when listing one on eBay recently.

The only significance to the ad is that it's for 181 rather than 180. To spotlight their great new character, why wouldn't Marvel be advertising his "true first appearance" (:blahblah:)?

Sure, why not.... Marvel DID advertise his 1st true appearance.

They advertised it in DD, Thor, MP.... and in IH180 :D
