Fantastic Four #50.

Good Surfer image, but Johnny Storm strolling to class in a topcoat steps on the climax of the best story of all freaking time.

That was the first image that came to my mind. Along with the floating heads.

Terrible composition imposed on an otherwise awesome cover.

So why wasn't this thread titled   Where The Artist Screwed The Cover ?

Because I don't condone having sex with covers?

The covers could be even messier back then, though.

Terrible cover layout and mediocre art.

Far worse than EC.

On the flip, the bar code on this one is completely ruined by Byrne's 'art'

MJ.

Byrne’s done much, much better, of course.

As I’ve said before, I’m a huge John Byrne fan.

That cover’s from a particularly weak period he had in the late 90s to early 2000s.

I'm just having fun-I think Byrne is top notch.

I was born in 81, then Woodstock seemed like forever ago, or 1969 did even though it was only 12 years earlier.

Then they had Woodstock 2 in '94?

Then it all kind of made sense.... or more sense than it did lol

why the long face?

I don't blame the cover artist but the publishers who added some of this junk on top of the original cover art drawings. I get why-- they were trying to draw attention to the book and had the mindset that these books were mostly considered consumption products. Then they started throwing the whole "Collectors" type messages-- even more useless cover distractions.

Why the stupid UPC label ever needed to be on the front cover never made sense to me as it would still serve the same purpose on the back cover. That was probably a remnant of the old days when remaindered copies had the top half of the cover removed. But wouldn't it make more sense to put the UPC in the top left corner if that were the case?  Or it might possibly have been something that was forced as practically all periodicals had the front lower corner UPC.
