80?  And more than double the page count?  That is a full short box of 1 issue of variant covers.  I am surprised that they don't have a book of just the covers.

The covers are better than the interior...doh!

Those 80 variant covers would make a great sociological study of today's comic collecting community.

Less than 10 (mainly the decades covers) really seem like homages to the Detective Comics title, the kind of thing that collectors used to want back when I started collecting.  Remember these?:

It used to be anniversary covers were a homage to the covers and characters published in the title in the past.  (That Action 1000 poster was a continuation of that idea.)

Instead, the overall impression I get from these variants is that comics readership is really trending old.  Why?  Because of the vast number of cheesecake covers.  GGA seems like a form of nostalgia that appeals most to collectors who are 50+, given that kids today can just pull up porn on their phones.

The covers that I plan to collect in CGC SS:

  1. Steve Rude's 1930's variant.
  2. Bruce Timm's 1940's variant.
  3. Michael Cho's 1950's variant.
  4. Jim Steranko's 1960's variant.
  5. Bernie Wrightson's 1970's variant.
  6. Frank Miller's 1980's variant.
  7. Tim Sale's 1990's variant.
  8. Greg Capullo's 2010's variant.
  9. Williams/Lee Silver Convention variant.
  10. Alex Ross' DC27 homage cover variant.
  11. Alex Ross' virgin variant.

I don't like the 2000's decade variant - which pleases my OCD - since there were only 8 AC1000 decade variants and there are 9 for this issue.

I bought only one of them...

Couldn't even tell you what is currently going on in Batman... but I liked the cover...

Bruce Timm is always a good choice.

I have pretty much stopped buying new comics, except for Batman (the main title), Love & Rockets and Aliens stuff from DH. I held onto Tec for a long time, but the 1000 deal looked like a good jumping off point, especially at the $10 cover price. No thanks. I'm done. Sold my Rebirth and 52 runs, and dropped the title from my holds a couple of weeks ago to be sure I wouldn't get stuck buying one of these. I'll probably track down the Bolland book at some point for my BB collection, but otherwise this was the breaking point with me and new books. No offense to those who enjoy them. I'm not an anti-variant snob. I just realize at this point in my life I'd much rather spend money on old books instead of piling up multiple cover variants for titles I don't even enjoy that much anymore.

Yes, I'm aware of Robinson's original. Bruce Timm is still always a good choice!

@F For Fake & @stippy52 Totally agree about most MA books!

Most stories/art today don't appeal to me, rather put the $ towards SA books!

I think that DC has done mostly a great job with New 52 and now DC Rebirth.

I have yet to dive deep into a Marvel title. I hear that Immortal Hulk is great. ASM lost my attention around the 10-issue mark. Still have yet to read the current run on Uncanny X-Men...

For the most part I've enjoyed the 52/Rebirth Batman books, I just don't want to buy them anymore. Batman is published twice a month, (minimum) 2 covers per issue. So that's four Batman books at $3.99 per month. If you collect Detective as well, that doubles your cost. $32 a month to keep up with Batman isn't necessarily going to break my wallet, sure, but it's simply more than I want to pay. I'm just not into it anymore. When I started buying Batman there were two books per month, and they were 75 cents each, I believe. $1.50 per month to read two Batman books. These days I'd rather wait and buy the story in a hardcover for $15, and put that monthly $32 towards silver and bronze stuff.

Marvel I've kept up with here and there with the Marvel Unlimited app. $10 a month to read as much as I want, I can get behind that, and would do the same with DC if they ever went that route. But as for stacking up more piles of $4 pamphlets? Meh. I'm close to done.

A few titles of New 52 & Rebirth were ok

I did like the Thanos series, especially the CGR issues  because @ the end it read like a classic What if story, but other than that there isn't much to have a pull box @ your LCS  these days!

If you're a complete complete-ist, sure. I personally don't see the necessity of buying every variant. 99% of my single-issue collection are of the 1A/direct cover. I have... 12(?) or so variants, and that's only for something like 2013's Infinity Hyuk-Lee because he did 1 for all 6 issues of the Black Order/Generals.

I do heavily, and most recently, agree with your outlook of waiting for the hardcover/TPBs. There are some ongoing series that I prefer to have and read ASAP, though. Mainly Superman, Batman, Action, and 'Tec.

I really need to invest in the apps.

True. I actually abandoned my pull list 2 months after filing it. I just find buying TPBs for things like DC's Elseworlds, The Golden Age, and Black Label reprints. I mainly filled out the pull list for the new DC Black Label stuff, but after Damned #1 there isn't any hype-hoarding preventing me from getting the upcoming stuff.
