I'm wondering if we can compile a list of books 1990 to current that have proven to have significant back issue value ($500+ in CGC 9.8) which have NO (intentional) variants.

THE LIST:

Akira #38

30 Days of Night #1

Avenging Spider-Man #9

Batman Adventures #12

Best Cellars #1

Bone (1991, Cartoon Books) #1

Bone (1991, Cartoon Books) #2

Chew #1

Creatures of the Id #1

Cursed Pirate Girl (Comixpress)

Cyberfrog (1994) #1

Detective Comics #880

Dime Press #4

Dreamwalker #0

Elseworlds 80-Page Giant (valuable because it was recalled)

Evil Ernie (1991) #1

Goon (Avatar) #1

Harbinger (1992) #1

I, Lusiphur #1

Invincible #1 (honorable mention, the regular is $500+, the Larry's variant isn't $500+)

Knights of the Dinner Table #1

Malibu Sun #13 (honorable mention, not a comic book)

Mouse Guard (Comixpress) #1

New Mutants #98

NYX #3

Razor (1992) #1

San Diego Comic-Con #2

Solar #10 (the second print was 6+ months later)

Sonic The Hedgehog (Sega, 1991) #1 (honorable mention, 5.25" x 7.25" mini-comic)

Strangers In Paradise (1993, Antarctic) #1

Tank Girl (1991) #1

Walking Dead #1 (white/black mature label (unintentional?) variations, both are $500+)

Walking Dead #2

Walking Dead #19

Y: The Last Man #1

REPRINTS (Not variants, produced years after the originals)

Bloodshot (DMG) #1 (a 2015 Chinese promo reprint of a 2012 book)

Harbinger (DMG) #1 (a 2015 Chinese promo reprint of a 2012 book)

Incredible Hulk #377 Third Printing (a 1994 reprint of a 1991 book)

Marvel Collectible Classics: Spider-Man #1 (a limited 1998 chromium reprint of a 1988 book)

Marvel Collectible Classics: Spider-Man #2 (a limited 1998 chromium reprint of a 1990 book)

Spawn #1 Black & White (a limited 1997 reprint of a 1992 book)

Best Cellars and Dreamwalker #0 look like they cross $500 in CGC 9.8 as well. (thumbsu

Ah yes, wasn't even thinking of those early Goon appearances. Good call!

All New Marvel Now! Point One #1 is another one. 1st Kamala Khan.

That's a variant situation. :foryou:

Is it? I don't know much about this book. But cover A seems to sell right around $500 (although maybe not close enough!)  https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=25139861

Yeah, there's a 1:75 variant listed on the same page. Ultimately, we may expand this list to be "regular covers" that sell for $500+ in CGC 9.8, but right now it's for books without variants. hm

Wow TEC 880 has risen that much?  I remember picking up a 9.6 for 200 and thinking that was way overpriced...

I've got to think that that can't last. The market is silly

There are more CGC 9.8 copies of the Detective #880 Foil reprint (2018) than there are CGC 9.8 copies of the Detective #880 (2011) original.  The CGC Census will need to inflate for the 2011 original before the market will see a big change.

I'm adding a note to myself about Edge of Spider-Verse #2, if we decide to include regular covers at $500+.

Are there lots of examples where the regular version of a book (which also has variants) is worth $500+ in CGC 9.8?

My assumption is that CGC 9.8 $500+ is still rare except for variants (and, evidently, self-published books).

If Cry for Dawn was released just a month later it would probably be a contender

Definitely, except that it would take more than a month.  Cry for Dawn #1 is identified (by CGC) as April 1989.

30 Days of Night 1 is actually a variant of the original spiral bound one, but it is mighty minor.

I'm surprised by the number of self-published books on the list. Is it fair to say the 30 Days of Night #1 (comic) was normal (IDW) and the 30 Days of Night #1 (spiral-bound) was self-published?

Maximum Carnage 1 Acclaim video game promotional, published June 1994.

9.6 sold for $625 11/22/18

high grades of these are scarce so no sales recorded for 9.8 on gocollect

does it count?
