Initials or name printed on inside splash page

Years ago I purchased a large Silver Age DC collection from a collector here in Phoenix. The books, ranging from 1963 through 1966, have white pages and great colors...very supple too! The original owner of these gems printed his initials (ironically!) "RAT" in the middle of the indicia on the inside splash page. If not for the initials, many of these books look to be in the VF+ 8.5 or higher range. What is the criteria that CGC uses to grade books like this? Any help would be appreciated.
