“NM” Captain Britain #1

I bought this as NM sight unseen from a large dealer (I should have asked for scans but...rolled the dice). Anyhoo...pretty sure I got ripped but here is my denial post hoping for it all to be explained away with manufacturing defects. A few questions:

1) Are those thin ripple/crease lines production error? Part of typical damage from mask inside?

2) Color fade or registration type error?

3) Black ink on the back. With this being newsprint type paper, is this treated as production flaw?

4) I got the mask with it. Do I have to insert it for it to be considered during the grading process? Hoping, and suspecting, I can just have it in the bag with it...?

Those are printers creases on the front and back covers. The paper they printed that book on is the worst I have ever seen. The mask is missing a strip of white cardboard on the perforated side. The white card board had a bead of glue on it that adhered it to the newsprint for a week or two before it came loose. Doubt it gets a NM either, but it is a nice copy.

Good catch on the mask being incomplete, uugghh...also not disclosed.

Apparently these get a qualified label if the mask is loose, although there is a gent on the board who bought one off the rack and said they came loose (I dug through the board archives).

I sent an email to Doug Sulipa, as he had a CGC 9.2 listed and here's his response when I asked him about if the mask was loose or not and here's his response:

"Hi Greg

I imported all the Captain Britain from the UK, when they were new in 1977-1978.

I can confirm that all copies of #1 came new with the MASK Loose.

Most copies originally came with a horrible Elastic Band around the mask, some came without.

I quickly realized the Elastic Bands were damaging the comics & removed them to prevent major damage.

People who left the Elastic Band in the book saw bad indentations, stains around it, then it stuck to the paper.

If left long term, the Elastic Bands petrified, started to crumble & then became permanently embedded in the paper inside, making them Low Grade copies.

My copies all had loose Masks, with NO Elastic Bands, thus they survived in higher grades.

I have sent in about 35 Copies to CGC over the last five years & am down to my very last copies.

 Thank You, Doug"

***So, it appears that CGC will just grade the books with masks loose***

Y’all rock, and special thanks to Greggy & Doug for having a definitive answer. The dealer is stepping up. He has extras and has offered to send a complete mask.

This book does have an indention running from the middle of the book to the front cover, presumably from the rubberband...and where it starts there are a couple brown stains. I’m very surprised CGC hits books on grade considering it’s a “natural” occurrence from the book’s original state. How is it any different from say...marvel chipping?

I’ll request the new mask and have it pressed/cleaned (which isn’t my preference).
