Hulu's HELSTROM show (2020)

"Marvel's Ghost-Rider" and "Marvel's Helstrom" make their way to Hulu in 2020, as Marvel Television and Hulu expand their partnership with the addition of these two new live-action series based on fear properties.

Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer in "Marvel’s Helstrom." The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the worst of humanity—each with their attitude and skills. "Marvel’s Helstrom" is executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski, who will serve as showrunner and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.

“As a lifelong Marvel fan, I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring this darker, thrilling corner of the comic book universe to life, and I’m just grateful to everyone at Marvel Television and Hulu for the opportunity,” said Paul Zbyszewski, Executive Producer and Showrunner. “Marvel’s known for all the heart, humor, and action they put into every series, but this time around we’re adding some scares to that mix. I think we’ve found a compelling way to dissect some of our deepest fears through the experiences of our two lead characters.”

Marvel And Hulu Set Live-Action ‘Ghost Rider’ And ‘Helstrom’ Series

Quote

In Helstrom, Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity — each with their attitude and skills. Marvel’s Helstrom is executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski, who will serve as showrunner and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb.

From the sound of it, Helstrom shares some similarities to the Marvel comic book character Daimon Hellstrom who was also known as Hellstorm and the Son of Satan. He first appeared in the Ghost Rider comics before getting his own Son of Satan series. He has demonic abilities and the ability to travel back and forth between hell. In the comics, he has a sister named Satana — which is probably why his sister is named Ana in the Hulu series. It will be interesting to see how close the new series will be to the comics.

The Helstrom siblings and Ghost Rider live in the same world in the comics so it is almost certain there will be crossover between the two series — and they may even appear in Runaways. Either way, it is clear that Hulu is embracing its inner occult.

Interesting, but there have already been many series featuring exorcism or mystic detectives, black magic, etc, with DC having got there first with Constantine and Lucifer.

I’d still like to see how the conflicted dual nature of the character is conveyed.

ComicBook.com has learned Marvel's Helstrom will begin production starting October 7th under the working title Omens. Taking it a step further, it would appear the Hulu series will be filming in Vancouver, a locale oftentimes frequented by The CW for the network's Arrowverse family of shows.

Production is currently expected to last until February 28, giving the production a whopping 22 weeks to make sure everything is filmed and in the can. So far, we're unaware just how many episodes the initial season of Helstrom or its sister show Ghost Rider will consist of, but judging by the production schedule, it'd appear the crew will get two weeks on average to film an episode.

With production set to kick off just over three weeks from now, it's safe to say the production is deep in the casting process; it'd be reasonable to expect news on who'll be playing Daimon and Ana Helstrom, plus their "serial killer" father, in the coming weeks.

Helstrom appears to be safe from cancellation.

Hours after Hulu pulled the plug on Marvel's Ghost Rider, ComicBook.com has learned the streaming platform is apparently "very happy" with Marvel's Helstrom. As previously reported by Deadline, it's the full intention of Hulu to continue development on the Paul Zbyszewski-led series. In fact, the show's still on track and scheduled to begin production on the initial episode as soon as October 7th, as we previously reported. Little has been revealed about the series, though it's believed to be close on casting both Daimon and Satana "Ana" Helstrom in the days leading up to New York Comic Con next weekend.

Announced at the same time, Ghost Rider and Helstrom were supposed to be part of what Marvel Television boss Jeph Loeb has been calling the outfit's "Adventure into Fear." Just before the announcement, Marvel registered trademarks for Ghost Rider, Helstrom, Glyph, and Spirits of Vengeance, potentially teasing the three separate shows would be leading into a team-up mini-series not unlike Netflix's The Defenders. Now, that could all be in flux with the sudden departure of Ghost Rider.

Before long, Marvel Television boss Jeph Loeb will officially cede all creative control for the television studio over to Marvel Studios. The latest reports, in fact, suggest the producer will be out of the studio before Thanksgiving rolls around next month. With restructuring at the House of Ideas well underway, many have started to ask — what about Helstrom?

As it stands now, there are three shows currently in play for Marvel Television as this transition process begins. Runaways has already received a release date of December 13th on Hulu while Agents of SHIELD has completed all visual effects work and is in the can, waiting for a premiere date sometime next year.

Then there's Helstrom, a Hulu show that at one point was supposed to be the first of Marvel's "Adventure into Fear" on the streaming platform. Despite Ghost Rider being sent to the chopping block earlier this month, Helstrom just recently ramped up production, the second Marvel show to film in Vancouver; the first season of FX's Legion filmed there before moving to the States.

Helstrom is in such a unique position because by now, they can't have more than one episode filmed. And as several trades have reported this morning, the absorption of Marvel TV by Marvel Studios is very much in flux. As far as we're aware, Helstrom has continued filming throughout this whole process and since it's already in production, it's likely the first season will be produced — that is, of course, unless some amount of politics gets injected into the situation.

What's even more unsure is the future of the show past its inaugural season on Hulu. Since it's so early in production, does Feige step in now and help shape the rest of the season so it's possible Daimon (Tom Austen) and Satana (Sydney Lemmon) Helstrom can link up with Blade (Mahershala Ali) and Moon Knight sometime later? The other alternative would be for the show to run its course for the first season before pulling the plug, essentially making it the last show this era of Marvel Television has released. The latter of which might be unfavorable to fans as it'd likely mean the characters wouldn't be rebooted by Marvel Studios anytime soon after having just appeared in live-action.

While Marvel Studios' focus has been on its Disney+ shows as of now, maybe Feige will want to continue Loeb's "Adventure into Fear" on Hulu, giving a platform for more adult, R-rated shows. One can always hope, right?

They forgot Cloak & Dagger.

Helstrom appears to still be moving forward.

“Marvel’s Helstrom” Hulu VP Updates Projects; Premiere Date “Very Soon”

Quote

Over the course of the past several months, Hulu and Marvel Studios have reaffirmed their commitment to Marvel’s Helstrom with a number of major casting announcements – names that carry some serious “geek street cred” with them (see below) – and now the streaming service is offering updates on not only that series but also on one of Hulu’s upcoming adult-aimed Marvel animation slate (Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, Tigra & Dazzler Show, and crossover The Offenders).

Taking to the stage at this year’s Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press event, Hulu Senior Vice President of Originals Craig Erwich revealed that he’s screened the first four episodes of Helstrom as well as M.O.D.O.K. – and he likes what he sees, especially the horror aspects of Helstrom:

“We’re in production on Helstrom. I’ve seen the first four episodes of that as well [as the animated M.O.D.O.K.]. I’m really excited about it. And it’s definitely different corner of the Marvel Universe in terms of its horror.”

Erwich continued, regarding Helstrom: “It’s a really unique take on a horror show that has a very unique family situation at the center of it.”

While Erwich didn’t use the occasion of this week’s TCA to reveal any premiere dates or windows, he did say that Helstrom, M.O.D.O.K., and other series would be coming viewers’ way “very soon”.
