Looking at a Large DC Copper Age Collection

Was looking at eBay SOLD listings to see if a long box that contained binders full of comic related cards and pogs had any value when this thread popped into my head. (I got the card binders as an incidental when I purchased a 30 long box collection of mostly bronze and copper books about 5 years ago. ). Made me wonder how bad a collection has to be to no longer be “worth it”?  Everyone must have a limit.

I've passed on 200 long boxes of 80/90s books and so has everyone else that has seen it.  The "collection" is all unbagged and out of order and has been picked over pretty clean.  The guy wants $6,000 for the 200 long boxes but the books are simply too much time and effort to be worth $30 a long box.  There are very few reasonable limits when the books are unpicked but once all the good books are gone then that threshold of what makes since to buy is very real.

Sounds like a reasonable limit to me. Personally, the largest collection I ever picked up was about 40 longs (may have been 37 or 38), and that is pretty close to my threshold. I enjoyed working the collection but it took up a lot of space and several months to get rid of everything. Had fun making money, but yeah, I'm thinking 40-50 is near the top of where I want to be, and I tend to prefer collections in the 10 boxes or less range. 200 boxes of picked over stuff, even dirt cheap, I'd likely have to pass unless I had someone who was going to help me schlep it around.

The time commitment is something I am worried about. From the list he sent me it looks pretty organized. I currently have around 8000 comics so this will almost double what I currently have. I have mostly Marvel so there wont be much overlap. I am currently parring down the personal collection and getting books ready to setup at shows.

60 longs will more than double you. 225 or so bagged and boarded books per box? What do you plan on doing with the 56-58 boxes of books that are not solo ebayeable?

It probably gets to be worth it if you can shave him down some from 10 cents and you plan to do some shows. You have ready made dollar box inventory. Bring shorties and tell people that can fill then for $50-75. Of course I am a guy who passed on 6-8 longs of free stuff when a local shop closed. My back started hurting thinking about it.

So here is my plan to buy the rest of the long boxes.

Let me start by saying I am not a DC collector. Some of my favorite series and stories are DC, Elseworlds, and Vertigo but I know very little about the majority of the DC titles.

For the 11 long boxes I bought I have been using comics.gocollect.com to determine what might have some value. I do a quick run through of the titles and if it has around 10 sales I pull it aside. I assume if it is worth grading and has recorded sales it is probably worth more than a dollar. I will probably miss something nice using this method. I have pulled about 200 books from the 11 longs using this method.

I have joined some Facebook comics sales sites and picked out a few that look like a good fit for this collection. A couple of the sites look good for selling lots and sets. I also get 50 free eBay posting a month.

An unfortunate side effect of buying it all is I will have to rent a monthly storage unit to go through the boxes. My plan is to keep the storage unit for two months. Anything that doesn't have value, hasn't sold or been pulled aside for dollar boxes will get dropped off at Goodwill or the Library. I might list it on Craigslist take it all for a nickle a piece.

If I do this plan I will start this weekend. I am off work Monday so it gives me an extra day to process the longs. Moving and setup will probably take a day.

What am I keeping for myself? I have already pulled a good stack of Elseworld titles and smaller Vertigo runs. I might read Transmetropolitan to see what all of the fuss is about. I might keep DC Comics Presents 26.

I purchased the rest of this collection. While the list numbered 60 boxes he kept 13 boxes so i ended up with 47 boxes. The final price included the two steel shelves he was storing the books on.

The books have been moved to my storage unit and I have started organizing. About 8 boxes of recent stuff were not sorted.

How do some of you pros handle a collection like this? Do you submit the better books to CGC or just cash out as raws? I am setting up at two small shows this summer. Due to vehicle space I am limited to 12 long boxes.

What was in it?

The answer to your bolded question is - to me - totally dependent on your cash flow and your storage situation.

sell some raws and use that money to slab the books worth slabbing. Maybe recoup your initial investment first even.

If you need to, otherwise start selling the high demand books, but retain the real value.

Here is the full list of stuff. I will list some of the items I have put aside later on.

I have a Batman Adventures 12 in 6.5 in the PGM. 99.9% of the books were bags and boarded none of the BAs were.

Not everything is as good as it looks on paper. The Preachers were trades up to issue 50 and the Transmetropolitan #1 is a trade also.

Pull all the 9.6 and 9.8 candidates and put them in Mylar. Take the rest as you see fit to your shows. I would separate all of the Bats and Tecs and keep them - they are only going to go up in price. Most of all - enjoy the whole experience!:applause:

@Dormian: Do you know which books were in the 13 boxes he kept ?

I never saw the missing boxes but I know he kept all of the Justice League which is probably boxes 19-23. Some vertigo titles are missing like Sandman and Hellblazer. No swamp thing. He also kept all of the Silver and Gold. He says he has 19 boxes left.
