  1. 1. If you could only PICK ONE, which would it be?

    • all pencil, no ink
      17
    • all ink, no pencil
      17
    • I'd get both in spite of your stupid false-choice poll!

The choice was PICK ONE. How hard is that?

If you could only PICK ONE, which would it be?

  • all pencil, no ink

    10
  • all ink, no pencil

I prefer inks over pencil. I’ve got one Frank Miller piece where he purposely didn’t ink over all his penciled lines creating a unique detailed face.

Because that's what Steve Mannion did there? No.

The poll come from the two pieces, not vice versa.

I read it as get both pages, one with just pencils and the other with just inks. SInce that seems to be the trend with different artists doing pencils and inks and they both being offered for sale.

I voted pencils as I prefer them overall, however I am not averse to owning inks even if the pencils are in someone else's hands. The last piece I bought was inks on blue line stat. I did ask the penciller if he would consider selling some of the pages I was interested in but he said he didn't have the time to dig them out. The inks in this case also are a much better representation of the published page... in an ideal world though it would be both on the same page.

There is a certain level of stupid to this question because even if the two are done by the same artist then not all will put the same amount of work into the pencils as the inks. There are several who love to just get the basic layout, lines and movement of the piece in there and then just go for it with the inks.

While not what I expected from this poll, the most interesting thing turns out to be just how much people injected their own bias/expectations into the equation itself. This is a real problem with polling overall, much like those experiments when college students are asked if they're against women's suffrage, pretty much all say, "yes, of course!"

Anyway...really low participation imo (number of views:number of votes, 480:33, lol) but whatevs!

Poll leans slightly more toward inks over pencils, meanwhile in the real world:

Pencils - $355.00

Inks - $182.50

Looking into the bidders, not the same winners and not even the same bidders near the top. The pencil bidders (near the top) were not bidding on the inks at all. No interest. That surprises me. Anybody else?

Agree, you almost never see this level of pencil when there is going to be ink too. That's why this pair intrigued me, it was a true apples:apples case for pencil v. ink where the only major difference (which will be published) was isolated without giving anything else up.

Reminds of an incident many years ago where someone used the word "niggardly" and was jeered for using a racist term. I guess a lot of people are parsimonious with their time when it comes to using a dictionary.

Third option was a joke. My first "joke" third option was, "hey vodou sucks, I'd never vote in any poll he created", but I opted for more lighthearted instead.

You really were supposed to pick ONE or THE OTHER; it's a highly controlled situation with little/no ambiguity (which is how polling is supposed to work).

Why I pick pencil only here (or any similar case), because that's the "art" (the creative work). Inks only is truly...tracerboy, with apology to Chasing Amy ;)

If I was God, I would, amongst other things, erase Chasing Amy from existence.

I have a pretty good Mannion collection.  And a lot that is not on CAF.  I would not put any correlation between bidding and polling. I did not vote.  But if both pieces were offered to me at the same time and could only get one, I'd go with the inked version because I like the rendering.  On the other hand, I was a bidder on the pencil version and did not bid on the inked version.

Steve's pretty unique in that (all things being equal) he can do really tight or really loose pencils and end up with the inks being about the same (in a good way).

Here's a different example (both are in pencil, on 14 x 17, centered on my scanner):

The "darker" version is Steve's original pencils (lettering in ink) and I call it the prelim.  The "lighter" version has tighter pencils, especially the angel/devil on Brownhole's shoulders.  I bought the prelim version.  Later, Steve was playing around and drew the 2nd version.  I thought pretty hard about getting the 2nd version mainly because I just didn't want 2 of the same.  In the end, the 2nd version was so nice, the angel figure in particular.  One wasn't better than the other, they were both nice in their own way.  But obviously, one of them was first.

... and I don't have it but Steve actually did a 3rd version that was inked.

I think I want to add a caveat to my earlier response. Sometimes, the pencils are simply “better” than the inks, so I may go for the pencils. Sometimes the inks are better, but that’s the presumptive selection so it doesn’t matter.

Correct, except to point out that the minority vocal action here (on the board, by way of comments and votes, this Topic, all Topics) should never be construed to be representative to the majority of comic art collectors and (more importantly) spenders.

I didn't know which way this thing would go, and to be fair I probably didn't set it up to be crystal clear to LCD, but I do think the outcome reinforces my previous sentence. For whatever reason, we here are an isolated minority, most obviously by the fact that only a handful (8-10?) 'top' collectors (by piece count, value count, cost basis count, etc) are vocally active. There are more than that, of course: here but silent or not even here, but their opinions and reasoning for their market-moving actions are not made public except possibly as anonymous-type third-party hearsay. I think past those top of the pyramid folks, it's not hard to imagine that all the way down the pyramid, plenty more of the same: vocal minority "here", majority continues to do what they do, silently, and we're not privvy to the whys and wherefores. Does it matter, do their opinions and reasoning matter? Sure. I love picking other collectors brains, challenging my own thoughts and theirs, bringing clarity and new understanding to subjects well-trod but not necessarily well-understood. Anybody else...?

Again, enjoyed hearing from Felix's roster re: what/why some artists collect and very much looking forward to the next generation (or two?) of collector thoughts in future podcast/s.

I didn't vote.  Impossible choice, because any purchase made within this binary option would be made on a case by case basis.  I don't find either option to be superior to the other.  Sometimes the pencils rock.  Sometimes it's the inks.  Depends.  My collection and my purchases are governed by one thing and one thing only--you know it when you see it.

Scott, not an abstract question: you can see "them" - one or the other of those two Steve Mannion pieces!

In this specific case, I'd take the pencils.  More energetic than the inks, not a big fan of the ink line in this particular example, and for some strange reason, I like the lettering/balance in the lower left corner better than the head, which looks/feels like a hasty edit.

OK, so you got me to vote after all!

And I didn't realize your poll was designed for choosing the best of this one particular piece of art.  I assumed, being a poll, that it meant choosing GENERALLY, as a collecting philosophy or guide.  That's why I didn't vote initially.
