Let's see everyone's favorite commission that they own with a few words about why it is your favorite.

 

Mine is this Marvel Girl/Nightcrawler piece by John Byrne. I had 4 of these Old/New X-Men team up pieces done and this is my favorite one. My favorite things about it are the smoke and Jean's hands and the lighting on Kurt's leg and face.

Back in 2009, I commissioned Eduardo Barreto to do this special piece. I gave him a few ideas, Starfire fighting her sister Blackstar, nice closeup of Kory and plus Kory in a photoshoot (the career she had in New Teen Titans). Eduardo then sent me a scan of his first rough layout. I asked for a few changes, add me as the photographers assistant and then add in a group shot of the New Teen Titans.

He later sent me a scan of the final commission. He had taken my suggestions but went in a different direction. He removed the photographer's assistant, which was going to be me. But then added me to the Titans group shot. I was blown away, thrilled at the final commission. When I first commissioned Eduardo, I inquired if he had any of the oversized DC stock (13x20) which he drew most of his New Teen Titans run. He did and used it which made the commission all that more special.

Ed's has always been my favorite artist on the New Teen Titans (Sorry George) and have been wanting to get a commission from Ed for a long time. Eduardo Barreto died way too young. I miss him and all the other great art he could have created.

And my friend Jameson Frost had the idea of adding the Starfire logo. Cherry on top!

I commissioned Black Widow from Eduardo Risso back in 2008.  I don't usually art direct my commissions, other than to indicate character and specific costume, but I saw that Eduardo often added a lot of "character" to his commissions so I gave the following direction: "I was thinking something involving the Natasha (redheaded) Black Widow, either in the midst of an assassination using her sex appeal to seduce her target or just after killing her target and cleaning up."  The results speak for themselves.  Fun fact: the entire creative team of 100 Bullets is featured in this assassination attempt, which appears to be occurring at the offices at DC Comics.

I only have four commissions but this was tough. Went back and forth between this one and one by Frank Miller. I went with this because it’s come a long way since 2010. Dave Sim did this commission for someone else. At some point he used it as a print called Marital Bliss for one of his Kickstarter projects. I bought it last year but thought it looked unfinished so I commissioned the logical choice and honestly the only choice. Gerhard originally did not want to paint over Dave’s original. He didn’t want to make a mistake and there were some rough areas on the original like old tone that was peeling. I was all for it though and eventually he went for it. He removed the tone from Cerebus and added subtle additional inked background detail along with a beautiful “frame”. Then he painted over it.

I really enjoyed talking with him and following the process and that propels this above my other commissions in which I had very little to no interaction with the artists.

I met Neal Adams at a convention. He was handing out a bunch of DC characters. I told him I was more of a Marvel guy.  The convention was pretty slow at that point so he said “I’ll draw Havok for you, give me an hour or two.” And this is it

I have 98 commissions! I'm going to eliminate my real favorite (Superman by Curt Swan) because I bought it in the after market.

I think the one that makes me smile the most is a toss-up. It's either my L'il Legion by Yale Stewart or Cursed Pirate Girl by Jeremy Bastian. 

I'm going to go with the former, but it's a tight race. Click to embiggen.

I have several commissions that I love, but this is probably my favorite, because the execution far exceeded my expectations.    Bob Layton was having a commission sale back in 2007 and I just asked for a drawing of the Starjammers facing forwards.  He delivered this publication worthy piece with title stats and tons of background detail.  I was a very happy camper when this arrived!

My favorite commission keeps changing but for now I like this one by John Byrne.  I asked for a re-imagination of Marvel Super Villain Team-Up 14 because the cover was originally pencilled by Byrne and the cover date is my birthmonth and year -- and Byrne knocked it out of the park - drawing even more characters than I had asked for.

I'm not actually much into commissions though I have had some work done for me.  In recent years I had Bruce McCorkindale re-create for me a selection of 27 x 1960s Marvel covers.  Bruce is really good at capturing the look and feel of the original artists.  Link to my CAF gallery (for those that want to see what's up):

To keep things fresh and interesting, for three of the re-dos of Ditko ASM covers I had Bruce transpose the splash pages, adapted as 'What If?'-type cover images:

During the 1990s I had British artist Ron Turner create for me a DALEKS painting (the chief baddies from the DR WHO TV series).  Turner had illustrated the Daleks comic-strip that ran in the UK publication TV21 during the latter-half of the 1960s.  It was a fully-painted strip and Turner had a good eye for colour.  For my commission, I provided the artist with my own  pencilled preliminary drawing of what I wanted and Turner stayed faithful to my idea:

For those interested, here's an original 1960s Ron Turner Daleks strip from the UK's TV21 magazine that I own.  The original artwork is fully-painted, as British printers were geared-up to reproduce directly from painted originals:

I have a lot of Batman/Spectre themed commissions (just got one from Paul Pope yesterday...WOW) but this one from Mike Grell is unique. From one of the Starbucks mugs that you can bake the ink to seal it permanently into the mug.  --Bob
