The Next Star Wars Movie After Rise Of Skywalker Will Be By Game Of Thrones Showrunners

Quote

They may be spending the night of the Game of Thrones finale drunk and far away from the internet, but filmmakers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had better sober up quick -- they are going to be the next ones headed to a galaxy far, far away. In a conference call with investors, as reported by Attractions magazine, Disney revealed that the next Star Wars film to be released following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December will be the long-anticipated Star Warsfilm from Benioff and Weiss. That the announcement came when fan fervor -- and fury -- over Game of Thrones is at its peak is likely by design by the House of Mouse.

Benioff and Weiss are reportedly developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies -- one of two currently in development. The other, from Star Wars: The Last Jedi filmmaker Rian Johnson, has been the subject of cancellation rumors twice in the last couple of months. The most likely scenario there is that, since Disney has taken on Fox assets and Star Wars will be alternating years with Avatar for the next few years, Johnson's trilogy will be delayed until after Benioff and Weiss's is completed, meaning that it will not go into active production for about five years.

Now it deals with this...

Quote

On May 14th, Disney confirmed that the next Star Wars movie — set to release in 2022 — will come from DB Weiss and David Benioff, creators of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Disney didn’t choose the best timing to make the announcement as it came amidst backlash over the controversial penultimate episode of Game of Thrones. Fans on social media voiced their wariness over Weiss and Benioff taking over the reins of Star Wars for what is presumed to be a trilogy of successive films. Now some fans have formalized those complaints in the form of an online petition to keep the Game of Thrones writers off of Star Wars.

The petition can be found on Change.org. It currently has over 13,000 online signatures. The user who launched the petition is operating under the name George RR Martin. Given Martin’s support of Weiss and Benioff following the Game of Thrones finale, we are confident that this is not the author of A Game of Thrones. Here’s the mission statement laid out by the petition:

“Putting the Game of Thrones writers (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss) in charge of Star Wars is not only a controversial decision but a mistake, plain and simple. This whole season of the HBO show, which wraps up next week, has tested fans with unpopular, illogical, immersion breaking plot twists and character developments. Seeing how these writers handled the most popular TV Show of a generation and seeing how the fans are reacting to it should not be rewarded with giving them the most popular movie franchise in the world!

It is in the company’s best interest to remove David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as writers on their upcoming film. The writers have a crutch for plot devices and rushed stories, with emphasis on “shock and awe” storytelling and eager to leave projects half-finished when they have other projects on the horizon.

Their respect of lore alone does not make them fit for this project… There are plenty of talented writers and producers loyal to the franchise that would make much better work in the Star Wars Universe.”

Weiss and Benioff’s first Star Wars movie is set to debut in 2022. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkeropens in theaters on December 20th. The Mandalorian TV series will debut on Disney+ on November 12th.

The Next Star Wars Movies Are Rumored to Take Place 400 Years Before the Skywalker Saga

Quote

The Rise of Skywalker has been in theaters for only less than a month. But the Star Wars leakers are still working overtime to find out what's next for the Galaxy Far, Far Away. The latest news out of the Star Wars Leaks Reddit community is something called "Project Luminous." First announced at the Lucasfilm Publishing Panel at New York Comic Con in October 2019, "Luminous" was revealed to be drawing together five all-star Star Wars authors for a project that would release in 2020. Aside from the author names, the only info fans were given about the mysterious project was a slide that said, "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things...Until...Project Luminous."

According to Jason Ward, the trusted Star Wars leaker behind the Making Star Wars podcast, Project Luminous isn't just a novel or series of comic books. And it's not a video game either. Ward says it's a major multimedia event that will span films, games, comics, and books. Unlike the Skywalker saga, Luminous won't be limited to the film trilogy format–it will take the Marvel approach from which Disney has seen so much success already. And though it may share a very beloved character with the Skywalker films, this interconnected story is going to be set way before the time of Luke Skywalker. If what Ward says is true, the next Star Wars film series will predate The Phantom Menace by as much as 400 years. "A Long Time Ago" indeed.

Ward says on MakingStarWars.net that the new (old) era of Star Wars is being referred to as the "High Republic." He thinks this is in reference to the time of the "Old Republic" when the Jedi were in power alongside their democratic Republic allies. The leak states that the story will follow a group of superhero-like Jedi exploring the "Unknown Regions." It's a time long before anyone had even heard of The Death Star or The Empire. But although the fascist dictatorship of Darth Sidious would not be instated for a few centuries, this time of the High Republic will, according to Ward, include Sith. As fans of the franchise know, the Dark Side of the Force users have been around for as long as the Jedi have.

Making Star Wars drops the name "Darth Bane" and mentions the Sith "Rule of Two" in their Project Luminous post. While none of this has been confirmed by Disney, it's fascinating to bring up the ol' Rule of Two thing today, after Palpatine talked so much about the so called "Force Dyad" between Rey and Ben Skywalker in Rise of Skywalker. The Dyad has been one of the most criticized parts of Episode outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed The idea of a bond in the force being so strong that it creates a sort of power vacuum seemed to come out of nowhere in the latest film. But for Star Wars fans, the number two is by no means unimportant for the series. Introduced in George Lucas's lore-heavy prequels, the Dark Side has known to be obsessed with twos. There's Darth Maul and Darth Sidious. Then Count Dooku (Darth Tyrannous) and Darth Sidious. And finally, the final and most significant "dyad" of Darth Vader and Darth Sidious. It seems only natural that a new series of films would unpack the origins of this bond between two wielders of the force.

Marvel’s Kylo Ren #2 comic echoes a big rumor about future Star Wars movies

Quote

The Rise of Skywalker left many longtime fans of Star Wars with questions. A few of the answers were threaded through animated prequels and tie-in compendiums, signaling a shift away from Lucasfilm’s long-standing divide between movie and Expanded Universe connectivity. Before, a movie like Rogue One built off the mythology of past films, and fans if Clone Wars could geek out over an appearance by Saw Gerrera.

Rise of Skywalker makes greater demands, and if Marvel’s The Rise of Kylo Ren #2 is any indication, the future of Star Wars storytelling is an all-encompassing transmedia odyssey.

The first issue of Kylo Ren, which arrived in the days before Rise of Skywalker’s release, introduced readers to the Knights of Ren, their mysterious leader (a buff lightsaber-wielder also known as Ren), and in a jump ahead in time, a distraught Ben Solo. After his scuffle with Luke Skywalker, which left the Jedi training grounds in ruin, the boy who would one day be Kylo Ren fled to the arms of Snoke, hoping to connect with the Knights of Ren. Kylo Ren #2 picks up with Ben and Snoke in the mysterious space greenhouse — the Emperor’s clone puppet really has a thing for gardening! — then flashes back to the poisoned Jedi’s first encounter with the Knights of Ren during a expedition with Luke.

A few days before Kylo Ren #2, MakingStarWars.net, which has published reputable plot specifics in the past, ran a brief rumor about the story of the next, yet-to-be-announced chapter in the Star Wars film saga. According to an unnamed source next movies will take place in a period of time dubbed “The High Republic” era, which would land about 400 years before the events of the Skywalker saga. It’s a period when, according to the report, the Sith’s “Rule of Two” has been established by Darth Bane and Yoda would be a scrappy young Jedi. The movies would align with Project Luminous, a massive storytelling campaign previously teased at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration. According to a report by fan site ziro.hu, Luminous will tie together video games, comics, and books to chronicle the story of multiple Jedi investigating ancient Sith gods in “unknown regions” of the galaxy, a saga MakingStarWars.net says crosses over to the new films.

Taken all with a grain of salt, the idea of Star Wars catapulting back in time to escape the sameness of the Skywalker saga is a logical and daring move, one that allows them to carve out deeper, interconnected mythology with the shine of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The big shock this week is that The Rise of Kylo Ren #2 bolsters the rumor with a direct reference to the unestablished moment in time.

Star Wars: The High Republic unveiled a first look at the new villains joining the galaxy far, far away, and they're unsightly, to say the least. The multimedia initiative, designed to allow new voices a chance to explore untouched areas of the Star Wars universe, has been drip-feeding information to eager Star Wars fans since the pandemic delayed its start to 2021. The heroes of the High Republic have had their time in the news cycle already, but everyone knows it's the villains who really matter.

The Nihil, the High Republic's primary antagonists, have already been touched on, as has the ominous but unsurprisingly vague threat to the force itself presented in the traditional opening crawl of the series. However, it's spooky season, and the marketing team at Star Wars knows that meant it was high time to deliver the goods on the most monstrous of new threats to the Jedi Order.

The official Star Wars site released art and backstory for the High Republic era villains for their sort of Halloween special. The first-look includes Marchion Ro, four Nihil, and the hideous Drengir.

Shortly after the calendar flips to 2021, Star Wars: The High Republic will officially kick off with Charles Soule's The High Republic: Light of the Jedi. Though the efforts to explore the era were initially heralded as a massive publishing effort across prose and sequential storytelling, a new rumor that's made its rounds online suggests The High Republic will expand into a multimedia effort before too long. In a new report published by the scoopers at Cinelinx, the era will eventually be home to a new animated series from Lucasfilm.

As it stands now, the Kathleen Kennedy-led production house has revealed it only has Star Wars: The Bad Batch in active development, a show expected to release during the earlier parts of next year. The latest rumor, however, also suggests a third animated series could be in development outside Batch and the new High Republic series.

Longtime Lucasfilm animation boss Dave Filoni is executive producing The Bad Batch alongside Athena Portillo, Brad Rau, and Jennifer Corbett. Judging by Filoni's pedigree at the outfit, it's entirely likely he'll also be involved with the High Republic project as well should it come to fruition.

"Giving new and existing fans the final chapter of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been our honor at Disney+, and we are overjoyed by the global response to this landmark series," Disney+ content head Agnes Chu said in the Batch announcement. "While the Clone Wars may have come to its conclusion, our partnership with the groundbreaking storytellers and artists at Lucasfilm Animation is only beginning. We are thrilled to bring Dave Filoni's vision to life through the next adventures of the Bad Batch."

The High Republic is a previously unexplored era of the Star Wars mythos, set some 200 years prior to the events of The Phantom Menace. In this timeframe, the Sith are nothing but a myth as the Jedi reign supreme.

The more I've researched The Acolyte, I think we could finally get some Darth Plagueis stories or at the very least explore the Sith from around this time. Looking forward to it more and more.
