Damage - SCS, happened during re-holder, or there all along?

Greetings fellow Boardies,

I wanted to show a book I just received back that I sent in for a re-holder. The book came back with some noticeable damage that was not there prior to me sending it away.

The front cover looked fine and I was pleased with the new holder, until I noticed the back cover.

The back cover, top left looks different than before. Specifically the indent near that corner.

The back cover edge, top right also shows damage, hard to see in the photo below.

Here is the back cover before I sent the book in.

This was quite a shock, the book came in a sturdy package with one other book, which came back without any damage.

The packaging

I'm trying to process this with a clear head, if this were SCS, the staples would show stress and the cover would have moved. Given the sturdiness of the holder and the quality of the packaging, I don't see how the damage occurred in transit.

Staples

Here is the real kicker. This book was sent in with five other books in April, also for re-holder. I got an email saying four of the six books I sent in would not receive the same grades due to damage. I opted to have the four books pressed and regraded, it will be several more months before I find out the fate of those books.

I know, the pictures are a bit much.

I'm interested if others would say all of this is SCS, shipping damage, or if the evidence points to the damage happening outside of their holders.

I have not contacted CGC yet about the book that came back damaged in the holder, and the other books have been received by CCS.

If you think this wasn't there before, then it could only have happened during grading, or in shipping prior to grading.

In my opinion, grader's couldn't do that kind of damage. It honestly looks to me that somebody missed it in prior grading, or your recollection of the book is different than what you thought.

In any case, all those bends seem to be easily pressed out. There is nothing breaking colour so your book can be restored to a pretty good grade.

Try not to fret. It's good that you pressed the others.

To me, the fact that the majority of the books in your invoice were damaged is a pretty convincing argument to support the theory that this book was damaged as well. I'd be calling CGC to explain what happened, and from what I've heard, Brittany may be the right person to talk to regarding this specific situation. In my mind, this book should receive the same CCS treatment and subsequent reholdering at no additional cost to you, but of course that's just my opinion.

In any event, I'm sorry this happened to you, and I hope you can get it straightened out (or pressed out). Good luck!  :wishluck:

I looked at your pictures and all I see is all that open space in the well that book has to slam into the open areas to protect the corners from damage. I'm not sure about the rest of your invoice but that book looks to have SCS. CGC needs to do some QC work in the encapsulating department. If a book is shipped roughly with this kind of space in the wells there is going to be damage from the book slamming into the hard edges of the well.

First pic looks like what happens when a book is whacked against something while outside holder.

I sent in the book for review and never got a response. The book was shipped back to me unchanged.

Did they say what kind of damage your books received (the ones being pressed first)?  I would think they would have given some sort of explanation as to what happened with them (if they thought damage occurred while in storage or in transit to them).  Did you take any pics of the shipping package prior to compare to what shape it arrived to them in?

I'm sorry to hear this about your simple re-holdering process.  I would love to get some of the newer cases myself but anything too difficult to replace to send in for a re-holder worries me for this exact same reason.

As for the ones being pressed, they sent me photos last May with a bit about how comics are fragile and how the damage in the photos could be a result of improper storage and/or handling. Three months later I get an invoice from CCS, and $75 charged to my credit card. We'll see how long this process takes before the books go on to grading. As for photos of the box, I did not take any of the box before I departed for UPS, but I did take a few of the books.

As for the Man of Steel # 18, the one I asked for a review of, and for pressing if they found fault in their product (which was just sent back to me), I did send a CGC rep photos of the book before shipping. I even sent a follow up email to the rep I was working with, and I never got a response back. When I got an email with the shipping summary for that book, I figured they didn't go for the press option, I called and spoke to a nice rep, when I explained what happened, she told me she couldn't see any notes other that the grade date in 2014, she also told me that if they reviews the book and saw that it wouldn't be the same grade that they would not send it back as is.

I'm contemplating calling back, to push for another review and for pressing.

I'm also contemplating walking on.

:/

Ugh sorry to hear you had this happen and still dealing with. I feel for you and throwing my 2c in. I’d call one more time if was me.  Needing to tell my self be patient/nice and explaining, again, from the beginning - what just transpired. Asking for someone and or somewhere that will do something proactive for you than, to begin to rectify the whole ordeal.

CGC will never admit to you they damaged anything. If you have good before/after pics showing how the book was damaged in their posession, and depending how important this is to you, take legal action. Otherwise, avoid using them. It's that simple.

Looks like the slab was dropped on that side so hard that it cracked the slab and allowed some of the pages of the book to slip out of the well into the thin space before the weld. Did it happen in shipping or before it was put in the shipping box at CGC?

I also noticed the note in the 3rd picture. I'm guessing these books didn't ship direct from CGC? If so, the company you submitted the comics through may have received a damaged box and missed the damage when shipping you your books. Additionally, on large CGC shipments (25+ slabs) I have often seen cracked slabs due to the weight of the parcel (the bigger they are the harder they fall).

Hope this all gets sorted out satisfactorily for you!

9.8, I’ll show the other book later, which was also damaged but not as bad.
