Not Just Pencil and Ink: Show Off "The Work"
0

15 posts in this topic

Not all pages are just pencil and ink on an art board. Sometimes the production process requires additional work be done to get the page ready for production. Let's see your examples. I have 3 and will post them individually.

Here's the first one:

The Mighty Thor 216 page 5

During the production process there was a lettering change made to the board, so an exacto knife was used to removed that porion of the board and then a piece of white paper replaced the whole. On the back of the page the white paper was held in place with 2 pieces of overlapping tape.

X-Men #98 by Dave Cockrum. This page is the first appearance of Logan without the mask. For some reason the lower panel with closeup of Logan was cut out then replaced with a new one. Not sure what the original panel looked like.

Three stages of a page from Thor 154.

Kirby's original pencils, which he copied with an old thermal xerox machine.

Suggested corrections by Lee or someone else on the back of the page, to make the hippies more contemporary.

Revised page (with lots of white out flaked off, showing the inked originals underneath

Published page (mostly stat with minor corrections)

Creeper New Hope New Fears page 7 (Flash #318) (unpublished)

This is the original art without the stats, the lower section had panels added and rearranged.  I much prefer the art as Dave originally drew it before the changes.

Unpublished page:

Published page with stats, layout changed.

How about the development of a cover. I don't own any of this art, but he various pieces showed up about the same time so I collected them. Click to see a bigger image and to see the individual scans.

I just picked up a page by John Buscema from the western Punisher one shot story, "A Man Named Frank" that had the bottom right panel cut out and replaced. I also happen to have already had a photocopy of Buscema's rough layout pencils for the page. file-116.thumb.jpeg.8a6b151cf7030356f911773a70521194.jpegfile2-42.thumb.jpeg.049713e8509d87923ba546563089bab5.jpegfile1-77.thumb.jpeg.3978aa52cbdeb910c4d67d3036c47bcf.jpeg

Yes. Color me perma-jealous, you're quite the blessed collector.

Prelim roughs of Eltingville Club #2, and the finished cover from Evan Dorkin. Evan's lettered pages are filled with adjustments and corrections, and the backs of some pages are littered with head sketches. Lots of cool process in his work.
