..Funny, I have another St John book where too much of the cover was trimmed during production, and it resides in a BLUE holder.  The cut is straight though.  (shrug)

Not funny at all. All normally produced comics are trimmed in production. The leaves are folded a certain way and then the edges trimmed to allow leafing through as a book. This type of factory trim to produce the book is not considered restoration. Re-trimming that production trim is considered restoration. Technically, what determines trimmed status is when a book was trimmed. The first time, in production = blue label. Re-trimmed ata later date = purple label. CGC restoration specialists make that call as to when, and that determines the label color.

This is the point I was trying to make or at least point out the flaw in the grading system. The book I'm talking about is a 1.5. But imagine if it were a PLOD 6.0. The difference in value between blue and purple would be roughly $30k. If you have no intention of selling, then it's a moot point. But if you are planning to sell, it's a grey area that gets more grey depending on the value of the book.

The irony of the whole thing is that someone trimmed this cover in the first place, to increase it's perceived value (pre CGC). The color touch on countless purple labels, the amateur trimming, was often done BY dealers, who now clutch their pearls at the thought of undoing what a generation of dealers knowingly participated in.

P.S. I was only home for one day, so I didn't have time to scan the book. But I'm home on Saturday and will grab it and post, so this morality play can enter it's closing act.

FYI. Here's the back corner that's been trimmed. Not the side, but the lower left corner.

I would send it back and ask for a regrade. That trimming did not improve the grade and should not have received a purple label.

It was graded years ago, perhaps their standards have changed (again)?

I would assume a remaindered book would get the NG designation "incomplete".

A remaindered copy gets a 0.5

This exactly.  Its like if somone wrote their name on the cover and that was called color touch

So let me get this straight... you want to rip off a chunk of the back cover to hide the fact that someone trimmed it.

Really?  This is where we are in this hobby...

I don’t think “chunk” is the right word.  Chunk sounds huge

If the OP split the $6000 profit he could make with you, would that change your opinion?

No, because I have faced this very issue before with a book. A board member here suggested this thing. I looked at him with complete sincerity and asked him, “Are you a (insert an F bomb as an adverb) insufficiently_thoughtful_person?”

But hey power of money y’all

no I would not

Fellow boardie has also suggested scraping off color touch to look like a books was scuffed with a cheese grader to get a blue label among other things.

What would i do? I would go all out Beatles.  Let it Be.

See @KryptoSpidey , I am consistent.

I fully see that. My reply previously was simply that you stated what i was doing was wrong. I wasn't then, nor are now doing anything. Simply interjecting my thoughts, things i know and people read into what they want. Not meaning you per-say, just everyone that implied i was doing what i said i know is possible. Which is completely not the same thing. LOL

Question.. I think I had this convo before not sure if it was with you or someone else about this roughing up the trim but wouldn't CGC be able to see the tears or rough up edges as something recent and could potential recognize a high dollar book such as AF15 as I am sure the high dollar books are probably graded by the same people and if there is a recognizable AF15 that had trimming now its a rough up edge do you think there's a good chance CGC will detect this? Also I wonder what if they detect trimming being rough up what would they do? I am guessing still give it the trimming PLOD...

Discuss lol sorry had to throw out some thoughts that popped into my head.

I have an AF15, CGC 1.5 PLOD.

The only restoration is a corner on the back cover that's been trimmed, like 1/2" long by 1/8" deep.

Every time I look at this book I can't help but think that if that were a torn piece instead of a slice, it'd be a Blue label, and worth more.

As horrible as it is to say, I'm tempted to micro tear that edge to "unrestore" it.

What would you do? (If you were going to sell it).

Mattereaterlad, it's been over half a year.  What did you finally decide to do with your AF15?

I thought trimming was along the entire edge, be it top, bottom or reading edge of a comic to make it seem properly cut and to potentially remove any edge imperfections???

It doesn't have to be the entire edge...there are many cases where it's just a partial trim...

I don't think you would be able to get that past CGC as I am assuming the interior pages also reflect this trimming so are you planning on tearing the interior pages etc..

Tearing up the entire book? This is insane

You can see in the photo that the interior pages are not trimmed in the same manner.  It's just the cover.

yeah I saw this the second time I was still learning a bit about trimming back then.. I realized that most trimming is cover only and rarely interior pages sometimes I forget that lol..
