CGC and eBay Partner on Expert Review Service

My personal eBay raw buying stratagy.

1. Look for hi res., large photos

2. Look for at least 5 to 6 shots

3. Look at buyer rating

4. Make my own assessment based on photos

5. Knock the grade down at least one or two grades. So if I see a 9.0 in the pictures, I approach the book as if it is an 8.0 or maybe an 8.5 if the photos are exceptional.

6. Bid on the book as if it is a lower grade.

I have only gotten burned doing this method once, and I got the buyer to accept a return on the book, when it was provable the book I was sent was not the same one in the photo.

Using this method I have actually done well buying raw from eBay

I don't think it is a good idea, certainly not something I would pay for but to each their own. And they are trying something "new" so I will give them that. Evolve or die.

Question though...Not sure if anyone has commented on it already...Person buys a book raw with the "CGC Expert Review" service...Says their  "estimate" or whatever is a grade x..Send it to CGC for grading and comes back say, way lower or restored.  I think, particularly a new collector, would be pretty discouraged with CGC by this? Maybe?

I know there are disclaimers galore, even when you send a book in but could this potentially create headaches for CGC?

I think this service only caters to noobs who do not know much about comics in general. I'd be surprised if any board member here uses this service (hopefully I don't get banned for saying that :p)

Why would you get banned? Lol

If it makes you feel better follow it up with (shrug)

Havent read through everything, but I really dont like this idea of grading a book based on scans/pictures. Sure it will give a base grade based on how the book looks in the pictures, but anyone can simply learn how to grade better, gotta start somewhere right? There are thousands of graded examples of professionally graded CGC  books to choose from with the respective number grades and use those as a rule of thumb to grade.

With scans/pictures, they can enhance the appearance of the images and even hide any important defects associated with the book. Not to mention other things unseen (missing pages, stains in the interior, rusty staple migration, etc.

I agree---it's very difficult. There are no guarantees when grading from a scan...

I think on “cheaper” books it’s not worth it. On GA, SA and BA of value it’s probably going to be more useful and worth the 5 or 10 bucks.

Bingo.  The people buying high dollar GA/SA/BA books already know how to grade those books.

So looking at a listing tonight. I noticed it says "Authenticity Verified". I don't recall ever seeing that before. The listing does have the CGC link on it. Not sure if they are related.

I think the authenticity for seller “mycomicshop” has been around before this announcement. If I remember seeing it correctly. I don’t think they are related. I vaguely remember Ebay advertising for “mycomicshop” as comic consignors. I could be wrong.

I haven’t read every single page of this post, but I don’t recall reading an ETA on this new announcement.

I sell a good amount on Ebay. I don't really care why CGC is offering this service. I would like to purpose to CGC, Let us Ebay sellers who send books to you get some sort of "Authenticated book by CGC". It couldn't be that difficult for us to input our account number and the books serial number. That way customers would know its coming from the original source who slabbed it.

I am just a simple man but for those of us who send a good deal of money to CGC it would great to be included in this. It seems silly that your expert review thing is popping up on books I had slabbed in the past 30 days.

FAQs

Ridiculous if the grades are between 8.0 and 10.0

A .2 between 9.6 and 9.8 pretty much doubles in value.

This is 100% true. But that said, CGC is providing a needed service for those that may not possess the type of knowledge and experience that we have here. Paying for an expert's opinion on a raw item is part of many other hobbies and investment acquisition. It doesn't take the place of actual certification, but it's valid tool for buyers whose own expertise may not be semi-pro or pro-level. Of course, resto detection may be one snag but by the same token, I'm sure that most resto can be detected by experts from a clear, large image alone! Some resto can't, but a lot can, as evidenced by how often we here on the forum see signs of resto and opine, "good chance of this or that" and why.

I like the idea. Other hobbies have it, why not comics, and who better than CGC to lend the opinions? I think the positives far outweigh any potential negatives by a fantastically wide margin. And the price is right too. Its inline with what most online experts collect for an opinion, and when you get into specialists (which CGC are), the price for this service is an incredible bargain by comparison to what they get for online opinions in other genres..

Expert Review Service...Review
Are you f**king kidding me?
Pay us a low cost service fee to guarantee your eyes do not deceive you.
Basically, stating eBay, and Paypal by default, with all of their safeguards in place to protect us from scams, are basically worthless.
We now need an extra layer of protection to protect us from scammers.
Just like buying a new car, the consumer is handed from one level of sales persons to the next so that every scammer can have their chance at getting a hand into the consumer’s pocket.
What’s next? A Trusted Expert Review Service.
Ad: As a Truly Times Ten Trusted Expert Review Service we guarantee to guarantee this graded apple core to have come directly from the rubbish bin of someone who may, or may not have, owned a comic graded 3.5 and possibly having been in a box of comics owned by someone who may, or may not have, viewed a Nicholas Cage movie. NOTE: Nicholas Cage was definitely known to collect comic books.
DISCLAIMER:
TTTTERS neither certifies, nor denies, Nicholas Cage actually ever existed, though Mr. Cage’s existence may be confirmed by submitting your collectible thru the twelfth dimension portal of our sister company CGC (Collector Gullibility Corporation)
From ME; Guys, I love CGC to death. This new 'service' is a carbunkle on the festering sore of someone's insufficiently_thoughtful_person nephew's last chance at avoiding an actual original idea.

I've read this press release several times, as well as this entire thread. I do not understand it, why it exists, what it does, where I am right now, what things are, what things look like, etc. I might be a very dumb guy.
