By the time Agents of SHIELD airs its final season next summer, Marvel Television could have another show set to debut on ABC. According to a new report from Deadline, ABC is actively working with Jeph Loeb and the team at Marvel TV to develop a new show for the network to fill the void that will be left when Marvel's longest-tenured show takes a bow. The report suggests the series will follow "something brand new, mostly" and fit in-line with ABC's strategy of female-focused superheroes.

It should be noted that this latest project is separate from Allan Heinberg's (Wonder Woman) female-led project that received a production commitment from the network last September. Heinberg's show has since been shelved by the network. In typical Marvel fashion, no further details were revealed or a timetable on when fans can expect to see the show debut.

"I have spoken to Marvel and we are in active talks about one project in particular," ABC president Karey Burke told Deadline.

The comments are a bit peculiar — as it's unclear if ABC plans on developing an original superhero and will be using a superhero never before seen in live-action. Then there's the "mostly," which could lead fans to speculate the show might be a spin-off of a previous show where a character perhaps was featured in a supporting role of some kind.

Thanks to the merger of Disney and 20th Century Fox, Marvel Television finds itself with just one cable show left. Fox's The Gifted and Legion have both wrapped up their respective runs while Agents of SHIELD Season 7 will serve as a planned ending to the show. It has yet to be seen what will come of Cloak & Dagger as fans await a third season renewal, with some speculation the show could end up moving to Hulu to better coordinate with Runaways.

DEADLINE: ABC Lines Up Next Marvel Adaptation, In Talks For “Mostly Brand New” Female Superhero

Quote

ABC is in “active talks” about bringing another Marvel female superhero to the network.

The broadcaster is working with its Disney sibling on another comic book adaption. This comes as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to finish after its upcoming seventh season.

The hope is seemingly to ensure that there is at least one Marvel property is on air on the broadcast network at any given time. However, it’s not clear whether the adaptation is being lined up for the broadcaster’s traditional development season or will be developed off-cycle.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told Deadline, “I have spoken to Marvel and we are in active talks about one project in particular.” While she wouldn’t give away any details, she said the character would be “something brand new, mostly” and that the series would fit in with its strategy of female-focused superheroes.

This project is separate to the show ABC developed last year with Wonder Womenwriter Allan Heinberg. Last September, the network gave a production commitment to an untitled hourlong drama from Heinberg, Marvel Television and ABC Studios. Written by Heinberg, it was about female characters with superpowers. But in classic Marvel tradition, few details were offered.

While the Marvel catalog has been well mined for TV and feature films, there are still a relatively large number of female characters that haven’t been on screen, or have only turned up briefly in limited roles. She-Hulk, who is Dr Bruce Banner’s cousin, and Native American mutant Danielle Moonstar are two such examples, while the likes of Misty Knight, the police officer with the bionic arm, appeared briefly in Netflix’s Luke Cage.

ABC is eyeing talks with Marvel’s Kevin Feige about bringing a superhero series to the broadcast network.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said that she was looking forward to working with Marvel Studios President and Chief Creative Officer Feige, but said that they had not discussed which particular characters would be suitable for a broadcast show.

“We love our partners at Marvel and we’re sad to see [Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D] go, it’s been a big part of our history. We’re looking forward to working with Kevin Feige and we’re at the very beginning of conversations with him now about what a Marvel and ABC show might look like. Right now, Marvel’s focus has been on Disney+, as it should be,” Burke told Deadline at the Winter TCA Press Tour.

Marvel is producing series including The Falcon and Winter Soldier, Loki, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Hawkeye, What If? and WandaVision for the streaming service.

Burke’s comments come after Marvel Television, which was overseen by Jeph Loeb, closed down in December amid the ever expanding Feige-run empire.

ABC had been previously developing a series with a Marvel female superhero, but Deadline understands those plans stalled. The Disney-owned broadcaster had been in “active talks” to work with its sister company on another comic book adaption. Although few details were known about the project, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said in August that the character would have been “something brand new, mostly”

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to finish after its upcoming seventh season. ABC had hoped to ensure that there is at least one Marvel property is on air on the broadcast network at any given time.

ABC also previously developed a show with Wonder Women writer Allan Heinberg. In September 2018, the network gave a production commitment to an untitled hourlong drama from Heinberg, Marvel Television and ABC Studios. Written by Heinberg, it was about female characters with superpowers. But in classic Marvel tradition, few details were offered.

Female-led show from Jeph Loeb is dead based on the regime change at Marvel. So this will be different.
