GA comics on American Pickers last night

Anybody see the show? The boys found a short box in a guy’s house in NO CA. Mike pulled out several beater GA books. Bat 44, Supe 60, a Flash in the 60’s and a Crown 1 CGC 4.0. They called the Great Escape in TN for an appraisal. Of course he gave the mint prices even though the Bat had split and detached covers as well as a panel out. An amended price was worked out and he bought all 4. I was dying to know what else was in the box.

The guy had passed away and his daughter was selling his stuff. A lot of cool stuff. I would have gotton along great with him because there was stuff all over the place I collect and buy.

There was a CGC book in there? Such a shame when a collection that has obviously been worked on relatively recently (as opposed to sitting neglected for decades) ends up in the hands of pickers for the lowest price they can negotiate.

I'm going to update the "notes for family" regarding my collection so they can at least have a good chance of realising a fair value for it.

I do the same for one never knows and throw in a dealers name you trust with it

Actually, they paid pretty fair. I don’t know what else what was in the short box. They have a minimal knowledge of comics. Most people would just offer her a nominal amount for the whole box.

I have my collection on a spread sheet with names of dealers that they should contact. Told them to make them an offer on the whole collection and take the highest offer.

I wouldn’t mind giving them a few more names. If anybody had any suggestions, a PM would be appreciated. It’s obviously a pretty large and extensive collection so it would have to be someone with deep pockets...

I watched this episode last night as well. I think the comic pricer (and all "specialists" they call up) are told to give the NEAR MINT price to make the show more interesting -- knowing the price will come way down as they already received pictures of a beat to he-- comic. I was also surprised how the two didn't negotiate much from the pricer's original estimates.

However, given the overhaul the owner did to that poster, and his daughter's comment regarding "fixing things up", probably touched up his comics as well. All that said, I also wouldn't mind seeing what else was in those boxes as the two have limited knowledge so may have left some cool non-superhero stuff behind.

Not to be morose; but it sure seems like the best course of action is to try to pare down your collection and annotate values on your "good" books long before you lose faculties. I watched my Dad decline over the last decade and he sure didn't do a great job of dealing with his assets. The day my brother and I found a Krugerand in a plastic garbage bag in the garage was perhaps the best indicator!! My Dad wasn't a collector so his assets were hard and easy to value if you knew where they were. A collection of items that have a less than obvious value and is subject to marketplace ups and downs needs the hands of an experienced dealer. Actually I'm surprised Heritage hasn't set up an estate arrangement; or maybe they have and I don't know.

Trying to “pare down” but I keep buying stuff. Hard habit to break. I have pretty much stopped buying toys and stuff that take up a lot of space. I have it all organized and on a spread sheet. I have also “educated” my family.

I know what you mean by finding valuable stuff in estates. Older folks used to hide valuable things in weird places. I’ve cleaned out several estates and found cash hidden in books. Gotta go through everything carefully.
