Mystery Box

Which is why before any serious deliberation is made about whether or not to buy a mystery box, one should remember the main reason why dealers put together mystery boxes. Hint: to unload dreck that they haven't been able to unload in one lifetime and probably wouldn't be able to even if given a second lifetime to do so.

That's not necessarily true. Sometimes a dealer buys a large collection for $500. Most of it is stuff already in inventory. One can sort it and add it to your inventory where the 8th copy of New Mutants 18 might sell in two years, or he can split it into ten lots and sell each as a mystery lot for $100.  Double your money and get rid of the inventory.  Buy at 80% off, double your money and give the buyers good value.

It might be hard to believe for some here, but most dealers aren't scum looking to hose their customers. Most are decent people looking to build long relationships with buyers.

Honest people, which the overwhelming number of dealers are, don't suddenly try to rip people off because it's dark out.

Like I said, it was my souvenir of being in NY and visiting Metropolis.

Getting mugged in NYC is part of the tourist experience.

They're even employed by the New York State Division of Tourism in order to insure that the experience is authentic.

People who like to buy mystery boxes are doing so mostly for fun - so for those who are strictly concerned about getting value will never understand it as much as want to participate. That's fine. I am not a fan of buy lottery scratchers or slot machines but other people seem to find enjoyment out of it. It is not as if the lottery or casino people are being deceptive either-- they are simply filling a need that some folks like to partake in. It is a matter of choice. Even the OP said they bought it on a whim -- not expecting much from it. I found it interesting once the box was opened. I was not expecting anything very decent in general but it was worth checking out as much as anything we see on this board.

Yep. It's fun to watch the mystery box vids. Most of those people know what they are getting into and aren't expecting fireworks, but we blow money on all kinds of all the time. So a few bucks on a mystery box for kicks is really really far down my list of things to worry about.

Never intimated that. But from my experience, I can't say that I've ever seen or heard of a situation where someone bought a mystery box from a major dealer, and would have paid what they did for the contents sight unseen if they knew what was there beforehand.

+1

That's it. Just fun. Don't expect anything more than just paying for the entertainment aspect of it and you won't be disappointed by results.

YouTube is loaded with videos of people opening old packs of sportscards. They'll take an old sealed pack they can probably get $2000 for because it's from a series that has a multi thousand dollar rookie card in it and the pull will probably result in cards no less than PSA 8s, all never been circulated. Usually they wind up with a handful of commons worth a small fraction of the pack price as do the odds dictate.
