Do we know whether these “stolen” books were insured? The one major other common sense fact that runs against this being an inside job is someone was arrested. Not really the preferred outcome when planning the scheme.

East of Portland, Oregon there is a county called Clackamas that is less sophisticated and comprised of working class individuals and retirees who are considered less educated by some. 

Many residents of Portlandia derisively refer to this area as Clackastan, and there have been some incidents involving residents their law enforcement that make this term apropos. Think Tanya Harding.

Update....All of the stolen 455 Batman and Detective comics stolen last December have all been recovered.  The case has been solved.

Assuming this is the applicable Maricopa County case, it looks like Weisbauer got probation.  Not exactly 50 years in the bowels of Trogdor as OP seemed to think was inevitable.

Wonder if anyone else was charged in conjunction with the theft.
