I like VERTIGO comics, complete stories (from 1-page to 56 pages) and "gallery art" when affordable. Aside from those loose guidelines I'm all over the place :whee:

Three themes have evolved over the years naturally, but they don’t dictate my collecting.

1. Things I read as a kid

2. I like to put my kids into commissions

3. I seem to have a lot of pg. 8s - nothing I ever go looking for. My family has deep ties to Hong Kong so I’ve always looked at 8 as lucky. It also helps that 8 is usually the end of the first act or a nice splash to start the second, so the art/storyline is usually interesting.

That being said, I do have a page 4 too...

It’s neat to see what thought collectors put into themes. My goal once was a page from every top Spider-Man artist.

you can see how challenging that might be.

nice idea for a thread. Personally I enjoy the freedom of not trying to fit everything into a theme but I also enjoy the clever ways folks make it happen.

Curious to see what drives some of your OA collection decisions. Maybe this can spark some ideas for new collections.

I've done the research and posted it on the internet!

Check it out here: Themed Art Galleries on Comic Art Community.

I need to update it. If you'd like me to add you and your themes, PM me here.

As for me, my themes are:

Love things that reflect the zeitgeist of the time during really intense times (even if it's before my time)

War related images drawn during the actual war (WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc.) when the outcome was unknown.  Atomic cafe duck and cover nukes sort of stuff.  Dirty Commie basterds.  Hippies, protesters, summer of love and counterculture stuff, etc.

Origin, character and situational recaps (esp when it all fits on the one page)

Moments I remember reading as a kid that mean nothing to anybody else.

I have collected convention sketches by dane Peter Madsen since the early nineties so I guess it can be considered a theme. My goal was to have a sketch by him in all single graphic novels and collections of Valhalla that I own. I have succeded, BTW (the only publication left is a "how to"-book which I aim to get a sketch in at this years Gothenburg Book Fair). And I settled for sketches because Peter's OA from the graphic novel series Valhalla is way out of my league money-wise. He puts a lot of work into them, so I am quite proud of my collection (which is rumoured to be the biggest in Sweden). As long as I move to the end of the line there is never a problem to get more than one at the same signing...

Madsen, Peter (sketches) (Some of them are not office-safe.)

That's actually a really cool idea, collecting zeitgeist pages. I might also try looking for some Vietnam war-reflective work. My family were Vietnam war refugees, so it would be meaningful to acquire a related piece. Do you have any recommendations on series or artists? Are there any mainstream publishing houses that incorporated elements from the Vietnam war?

There were very few Vietnam references in Marvel.  A couple issues of Thor (including a couple covers); several issues of Captain America (and at least two covers) and one of Sgt. Fury (when the gang got back together, natch).   DC referenced it in some of their books.

A theme I would collect if I found good examples for sale at a nice price would be the "superdickery" covers that DC pumped out in the 60s when for a while every other cover seemed to portray superman behaving like an absolute a-hole. or one of the characters betraying and maniacally murdering each other.   Somebody at DC had some serious issues...

I did not know about this page, and I did not see it the first time you posted about it, so thanks for curating all these galleries!!  Some of these themes are really fun to look at, and their owners definitely had great ideas! I particularly like when a cover is reinterpreted multiple times (Uncanny X-Men #141 cover, Covers Reanimated, One Minute Later, ...)
