Some of the most brutal back covers I've seen in terms of how nasty the dark edges are. Any thoughts on if this is permanent oxidization that can't be rectified or mitigated? I suspect that it's the case but wouldn't mind some expert opinions!

Anything can be rectified or mitigated...all depends if you want books that would be considered restored or conserved.

Dry cleaning will only remove surface issues. You would need much more than a dry cleaning to remove tanning, dirt and dust shadows this deeply imbedded into the paper fibers.
