They would designate it Newsstand on the label if the price varies from the regular edition. As well they will designate it newsstand if, for example Spawn #4 Directs came with the image comics #0 coupon. Newsstands didn’t come with it. Although there are some newsstands that have the coupon which are labeled as an error as well. I also believe if the page count varies or it the paper stock varies from the direct.

Hate to say it but I think you’re right. Don’t think the spawn 62 should have received a newsstand designation from CGC under Corona’s analysis.  Seems Willy Nilly to me. Pretty much picked up the entire spawn run newsstand as part of a large collection I bought last year off eBay! (discussed in a thread last November)!  Here are 3 more from it. No pressing required. Lol.

People generally consider these to be rare, there were very few actual newsstands selling comics by this time (mostly bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Borders), but it is also nearly impossible as you've stated to find data on the newsstand distribution/publishing numbers for this era.  So anyone who tries to quote specific numbers without providing solid evidence should be looked at skeptically.  But prices can be quite a bit higher than the direct edition counterparts, especially for high grades.
