I love trivia -- especially comic trivia -- and the more odd and obscure the better. I'm not talking about what was the first appearance of some minor character that nobody cares about, but something that's really interesting that a lot of comic fans don't really know. (I liken it to the Miracle on Ice hockey game in the 1976 Winter Olympics. Most people assume it was for the gold medal, but not only wasn't it the final game of the Olympics, even after beating the Soviets, the United States still had a chance to not even medal if they had lost their next game.)

So here's mine for comics: Alex Schomburg is Puerto Rican. His real full name is Alejandro Schomburg y Rosa, and he was born and raised in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, moving to New York City when he was in his early 20s. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of Schomburg, and his name doesn't scream or even whisper Spanish/Hispanic, so I was really surprised when I found out.

George Herriman was African-American but passed for white most of his life. (well, wiki says mixed-race)

 

Steranko was the inspiration for Mister Miracle as he worked as an escape artist, among other occupations, before going into comics.

 

Winsor McCay drew the outline of his figures first and then worked inwards. Think about that when you look at a Little Nemo in Slumberland.

 

One last related one, some old time comic art expert was able to definitively identify artists' work based on how they drew one feature, the human ear. Everyone draws ears differently so if you want to study artists study their ears. in theory at least.

The first person to ever buy a ticket to a comic convention was future Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, who snagged the first ticket when they went on sale for the 1964 New York Comic Con.  

 

Martin also has credited the Wonder Man story in Avengers #9 for teaching him the power of killing of characters the reader is emotionally invested in. Here he is explaining how the Avengers are repsonsible for all the deaths in Game of Thrones:
