And that does make more sense now that a book as badly water damaged as this, obviously stored in a damp environment, like a basement, would have pages closer to supple and white rather than arid-stored books (attics), which typically have dark to brittle pages.

Exactly. This is super golden age size. Also, many books from this era tend to develop a spine roll, just from reading back in the day, and even a mild roll can add enough side to side extra size that the only safe way to store, aside from CGC slabs, is to house super golden age sized books with magazine bags/boards/mylars.
