agamoto
Hi folks... Got this off eBay, it was difficult to tell from the images provided by the seller, but once in hand, things looked pretty suspicious around that front top corner. Looking for a consensus on apparent grade and whether it was trimmed or if possibly could have came from the printer this way. I don't see how it's not trimmed. The deckling on the paper is only on the top half of the book, all pages before the centerfold. I hope I'm wrong. Compared with a ToS 51, which came from the same printer (Vista Publications) exact same time as the Avengers #4, late November/Early December 1963
theCapraAegagrus
Appears to be in the 5.0-range, and trimmed... Deadpoolica
silverweb
sorry to see the apparent trimming. I have been on the boards awhile but not sure I understand what you mean by "The deckling on the paper is only on the top half of the book, all pages before the centerfold"

Deckling, aka rough edges on the newsprint pages from cutting with a dull or imprecise tool. Unfold a book at it's centerfold, cover down, you have a natural split on the vertical plane down the center of the centerfold wrap. Now, draw an imaginary line horizontally from the middle of the left edge to the middle of the right edge and you have four distinct book quadrants. Number the 1st in the top left #1, the one to the right of that is #2, the one under #1 is #3 and the remaining quadrant is #4 I'm saying there's deckling and trimming apparent in quadrant 1 only. Almost as if it were cut to try and match the paper edges of the 2nd quadrant and back cover.

Thank you Well it could have been an amateur. Which does not excuse them, as they should have provided photos. Also, if presented with this knowledge, I would expect they take a return. It definitely is trimmed. 5.0-5.5 for me. If the price was right, I would not be too bothered but if graded I feel 99% confident you would see a purple label. theloveforart
agamoto
Well, poop. Crying shame. The seller refunded me 50% of the purchase price and I think I'm ok with that. They did provide photos, but the photos were at angles that made it difficult to tell there was any trimming issue. He says it's the way he bought it and didn't realize it. I'll get it graded and accept whatever nasty grading fate befalls this book. It's just one of those magic books that people want, even when it comes with purple paper. I'll keep you abreast of how it comes back. I'm guessing a solid 5 with edge trim. Thanks everyone! Deadpoolica and The Lions Den

Even with the book in hand it can be tricky. That edge does look "uneven". That doesn't necessarily mean trimming, but it could. Can you contact the seller? Just ask the seller to provide more photos of that book. The right edge doesn't look right but I'm not sure why anyone would bother trimming a B&B 116. Unless they are doing that w/o realizing it's not cool. The guy has OA as well with 0 bids on all of it and the auction running out.
