I find it cool (even if obvious) that both HA and PIH decided to include EQ and Frankie in comic OA auctions... knowing that's where the obsession and $$$ would be for these pieces.

So you're saying if the Louvre is ever really hard up to keep the lights on (or fund one former director or another's golden parachute...) we will see Miss Lisa in a comic art auction*?

Because -for certain- it won't be the fine art folks chasing  Chiaroscuro #6 cover!

*IMO this one would go to Hake's. They are very aggressive at scoring major consignments.

Just so I am consistently a rotten, dirty pinko commu-socialist...

I hope whoever sold the Frankie cover for the $1M minus $35K windfall (or whatever the consignor's cost basis was) considers kicking back a percentage to Liz Wrightson.

What would be more appropriate is for the consignor to kick back some dough to Bernie's kids. I'm sure they could use it.

You know what would end this debate is if a certain someone won it... there is NO DOUBT that it will soon be made into a Marvel Comics Frankenstein #1 cover with all the title graphics GLUED to the art. There you have it... the first comic book art to hit 1M!

For those who bought anything in the Profiles sale:

1.  Did you get an invoice via e-mail today?

2.  Did it say that you're responsible for arranging shipping yourself with a shipper of your choosing?

For me, the answer to both is "yes".  I'm just trying to see if everyone is in the same boat, or whether this only affects those who won certain lots (e.g., oversized and/or framed pieces).  I don't believe the piece I bought is particularly large, though, it might be framed.

I received my invoice tonight, and yes, for their 28% buyers premium, apparently offer no service at all. It would appear that they do not pack your items for shipment, instead somehow we are responsible for calling strangers to somehow get these expensive items, pack them and then likely charge a premium for their service?  Really seems like a pain, and had I realized how this worked, wouldn’t have participated in the auction.

I feel just slightly better now that I’ve ranted. Back to your regularly scheduled program.

Yes and curious if anyone here has done this before. Are the recommended shippers reliable and familiar with what they need to do?

I have done this for a piece valued at 8k and framed. I posted on Facebook and got several leads. PIH has a list of people they work with as well. The price quotes I got varied immensely from full concierge to Postal Annex. I went with the latter. Email below. All went well.

>>>

Assuming that we have the right measurements for the poster, and I can safely pack it in two boxes, with outside measurements of 31x29x7 inches, the shipping estimate, including $6,500.00 insurance is as follows:

$146.02  UPS Ground, with signature confirmation
$  67.00  Packing material and labor
$  20.00  Pick up fee

Please let me know if you wish to proceed, and I'll arrange the pick up.  Thank you.

>>> Profiles gave me the following emails to contact for quotes:
artpack@artpackco.com,Wendy@beverlypacking.com,icarbajal@usart.com,danny@fineartship.com,store2906@theupsstore.com,store1093@theupsstore.com

Concierge quotes topped 1300 dollars, if you can believe it. In the end I went with Robert at Postal Annex over the two UPS stores (that oddly enough provided different quotes). Robert at Postal Annex came well regarded from Facebook.

NB: Insuring for the bp is apparently pointless as it isn't considered part of the value.

First, not including the BP in the value is absurd.  I can see tax not being considered part of the value, as that amount varies depending on where you live (and can be zero if you live in certain states or have a reseller number) and has nothing to do with the piece itself.  But, all people figure in BP to determine what they're willing to pay.  By not including the BP in the value, you could only insure half of your purchase price if you bought a piece at an auction house that charged a 100% BP.  Makes no sense...

Second, I've had a number of pieces shipped from Heritage via a third party shipper; the last time I did it, I was able to get it shipped pretty cheaply since I had them ship FedEx with a direct signature required and was able to waive the insurance since I was covered by my own policy.  Unfortunately, it looks like all the budget shipping options provided here use UPS, which Collectibles Insurance does not cover.  Still, it looks like it would be cheaper to use UPS and have it insured by them rather than to hire a concierge shipper and have them use FedEx, so, I may end up going that route as well.

EDIT:  looks like the Postal Annex can ship via FedEx. hm

Here's one of the recommended shippers that PIH provided (screen grab of home page is below). hm

Good to know that they will "handel" your art shipping as well as "analize" your need and pricing.

I'm going to leave my anus out of this and use someone else I think...

Common saying: "You only get one chance to make a good first impression."

Corollary to the common saying: "Don't let people's first impression of you be that you're some fake Russian hacker site."

Re: Collectors Insurance... per my last call from them:

Quote

Signature Required FedEX, Registered and Express USPS for $50-60,000

For international, this includes DHL, Airborne Express, FedEx international. Note: USPS does not offer signature for international.

Or you can pay Collectors Insurance for a special addon endorsement for shipments over $60K.

You might want to double-check with CI on these details, but USPS Express Signature Required has been a good and sometimes better option for me than FedEx Express in cases like this.

You could also just make your own label and email the PDF to the shipper. For FedEx you can just ballpark the weight and dimensions because they re-measure them anyway for billing.

No arguments from me on the bp thing. I found it quite ridiculous, but then you know that the purpose of postal insurance of any kind is to screw you as many ways as possible.

Given that every random po-dunk regional auction on liveauctioneers offers shipping I, too, find it surprising that PIH does not.
