I personally don’t assign  grades above NM+ 9.6

there are fools on ebay thats why.

assigning grades just leaves you wide open to fool attack. "THATS NOT A 9.6!"

Are there more fool sellers or buyers?

Is the buyer that screams “THATS NOT A 9.6!” A fool?  Or is the seller that listed his VF/NM copy as a “NM+” the fool?

Probably a mixture of both. I would hate to tell a guy it's a 9.6 and it comes back a 9.4 then bombs my feedback with negativity

I doubt that will happen. Look ebay has its nutjobs because in all honesty its the public. How you handle the complaint
makes all the difference.

I go a neutral this year. 1st one in almost 20 years on ebay. I missed a stain on one book in set of 14. The guy left me feedback before contacting me about it. Even though FB was left I still offered to replace the book because it was my fault I missed it.

Nail. On. Head.

I honestly think some people believe that the 18yr old Phillipino girl reading their messages are comic freaks who have CGC books and hot books everywhere at home.

They aren't and they don't.

Their next job after your email will be to sort out the disaster on a microwave having a different coloured handle, the next that a jumper is too tight across the chest despite them ordering the right size. The fact that their newly ordered cat basket can only fit 2 cats in at once instead of the 3 advertised.

And so forth.

You have to clearly identify what the buyer is complaining about - then explain either :

1) How it is incorrect or

2) Make them contact the buyer for proof of defect

Do neither and they just literally hit the "computer says no" button, tick off their KPI's and move on.

They don't care about your grading skills or post count.

They just want to know how YOU are going to disprove the complaint, or how you will make it right.

Yes..you are right Beige. At 4 am in my moment of need, I may have envisioned an office in Palo Alto, CA— full of a team of well dressed, educated English Speaking Resolution Specialists who’s job it is to help eBay customers — sipping fresh coffee, nibbling on donuts provided by their Manager, Fred, and eager to assist......  my fantasy was quickly over when I got the ‘issue a refund now scum bag’ auto response....

What’s with this “don’t assign a grade” nonsense????

I don't get it either

As a general policy, I avoid any auction that does not assign at least a grade range, and instead says, "I am not professional grader. Look at photos and decide for yourself."  Is there hard to see tears? Are there long bends not showing? Staple rust? 9_9 I'm not playing that game. Total cop out and waste of time.

I understand not wanting to paint oneself into a 9.6 or 9.8 corner, but at the very least offer a range with a general description.

For what it's worth, I NEVER believe raw 9.6 or 9.8 grades on ebay. If I want a 9.6 or 9.8. I'll buy it slabbed.

I sold 2 $150 ($300) Omnibus for $70 total as used. I never read them so you can get an idea of the condition. Had 10 pictures showing the items. Explained that mailing such large books could increase spine damage. Listed no refunds or returns in description. He received the books and started a return saying one of the books had some spine damage. I refunded the order and told him to keep the books. Did not even get a thank you.

People will disagree with your grade even if it is spot on because their definition of spot on might be different.

Someone sold me a ebay 9.4 that most here in the PGM thread said was closer to a 7.5. The pictures hid the defects.

Go ahead and check the refund in PayPal. You will notice that PayPal now keeps the fee they grabbed in the original sale.

I just sold a graded PSA8 baseball card for $980 and the buyer returned because he said he changed his mind. Paypal kept the 2.9%. I refunded the guy and I’m out $29 bucks

Giving grades just opens the door to headaches.  Even CGC-professional graders-people disagree with their grades constantly.  Giving a 'range' is also no solution.  You could say 'this book is a 6.0-7.0 and some numbskull will say NO WAY!  That's a 4.5 at best!  If someone wont buy if you wont give a grade that's not the kind of customer I am looking for anyway.
