A Boy and his Tiger: A Tribute to Bill Watterson at CAM

AFAIK they haven't sold any and may not be able to. I believe the whole point of his donation was for it to be kept together. Who knows Watterson's exact thinking, but that's the inference. The majority of what is in the wild have been strips Watterson gave as gifts many many years ago when the strip was still being created.

I'm pretty sure there would be conditions on the donation. Here is a letter that showed-up on feeBay awhile back, which reveals how particular he was with what ended-up happening with his art, and this was for a trade for a Krazy Kat strip, one could only imagine what the paperwork to bequeath his art to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum would have looked like.

We will have a signed Sunday print by Bill that was given to one of his editors coming up... I know it's not an original, but... it is signed. I've seen it and scanned it.  Framed up on you wall... well, lets just say it will cost exponentially less than the piece in Heritage next month! It's in our CAF gallery, have a look at that and what else we have coming if interested in helping the museum out.

Three auctions are live this week, closing in a few days!

First up is a piece by New Zealand artist Roger Langridge. You’ll know Roger from Judge Dredd Megazine, Roger the Clown, and the killer Hellboy piece he did for us last year. The image is on 11 x 16 paper. Mixed media.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-auction-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Roger-Langridge/153820650576?hash=item23d06cdc50:g:iuIAAOSwZDxeOLp0

Next is a piece from artist, Ryan Browne of TNMT and Batman & Maxx fame, as well as variant covers for the Usagi Yojimbo 35th Anniversary. Looks to be markers on bond. Really nice colors.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-auction-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Ryan-Browne/153820654110?hash=item23d06cea1e:g:cHgAAOSwZTNeOLzd

Finally, Ben Seto, who did a wonderful piece for our Hellboy auction, returns with a great full color illustration of C&H. A huge 11 x 15 image created in ink and watercolor.

Four auctions are live this week, closing in a few days!

First up is a piece by my friend Harry Bliss. Harry has done dozens of NYer covers, cartoons and is syndicated with his daily, “Bliss.” He’s one of the funniest people I know, we grew up together and beat the _____ out of one another weekly. Because that’s what bored kids in Rochester, NY do.  Harry has done a lot of cartoons with Steve Martin, and they have a book together coming out next year collecting all their stuff.  Harry did a great Hellboy piece for us a few years back, and this one is no exception. Signed by Bliss and Martin. The image is 6 x 6. Ink and Graphite.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-Harry-Bliss-Steve-Martin/153831971671?hash=item23d1199b57:g:dHUAAOSwQY9eReHl

Next is a piece from another friend, a guy you’ll see slinging ink in artist alley every year at SDCC. Tony Giraldi Brown is his name, and he’s local to the Bay area and has been a friend of mine and the museum for years. The piece is 11 x 17 and is ink and watercolor. He’s a good dude. Buy something from him at SDCC (or this!)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-Tony-Guaraldi-Brown/153832005473?hash=item23d11a1f61:g:5FEAAOSwXI1eReGf

Next up is Charles Brubaker. He’s done a lot of work for MAD and for SpongeBob Comics. His comic “Ask a Cat” is a riot. His little one pager from that collection titled “Dear Cat, do you make Art?” will make you laugh. Or maybe cry. Google it.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-auction-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-Charles-Brubaker/153831946450?hash=item23d11938d2:g:U7EAAOSwSgFeRc5c

Our final piece this week is really cool, but know that it is a Giclee. Chris Shadoian Fossett is a former Art Director/Designer at Disney, Abrams, Dark Horse, and Lego. It’s clear this piece is inspired by his time there. Chris is currently working on his own books. The digital piece is numbered 1 of 1, and there will be no more printed, and it is embossed with his mark.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-auction-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-Chris-Shadoian-Fossett/153831953009?hash=item23d1195271:g:3M0AAOSw3tdeRdFb

That’s it this week. Last week was a very good week for us, the pieces sold very well, and we can’t thank the OA collecting community enough for helping the museum out.

I know, right?  No excuses... will do + salute !

Let it never be said that exitmusicblue doesn't keep his promises.  Just went today for the first time with the wifey (followed by a visit to the Disney Family Museum).

Lots of EC, some wartime art, and even a Caniff pinup.

For a moment I was awestruck by the rows and rows of EC comics... and then I saw that they were just placards.  An A for effort.

Thanks very much for posting your photos of your visit to the museum. Andrew Farago, our curator, puts a lot into these exhibitions, and I think he does a fine job. I agree that the comic covers were a nice touch. I believe this is the first time that these three classic  EC stories, that are in a true pedigree collection have ever been shown together. Some of Feldstein, Davis and Ghastly's best work, if you ask me. When this show comes down, the Calvin and Hobbes show will go up in this gallery. It's not up for much longer, so try to get there if you can.

First, I’d like to thank everyone who bid on our auctions last week. The Bliss piece exceeded expectations, and Harry was thrilled. So were we! Thank-you again.

We have four auctions this week

First is a piece by Aaron Conley, the artist and co-creator of Sabertooth Swordsman. I personally own a page from this series and it’s a blast. Aaron was the 2014 winner of the prestigious Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award, and is repped by my pal Felix who set this up for us. (Thanks, Felix!) His piece is fantastic as usual. Aaron always delivers when he does commissions, and this is a nice and big 11” x 17” piece on comic art board, just like the ones that he does with Felix Comic Art. There’s a lot in this one, and it’s a fun homage to C & H. This is something special, given that it’s one of just a handful of comic art creators we have (we attracted a lot of strip artists this time,) so I think it will do very well. As Albert says, bid early and often!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Aaron-Conley/153839743460?hash=item23d19031e4:g:azMAAOSw5fJeTu5c

Next up is a piece by Phoebe and Her Unicorn cartoonist Dana Simpson. This ink and watercolor illustration by Simpson measures 12" x 16" It got a bit wrinkled during shipping (Grrr USPS,) but nothing a good hot iron won’t take care of. Don’t laugh, I had a really famous artist send me something folded in an envelope once, and I ironed it out. I really did. It works. Don’t burn yourself if you try it, and use a piece of thick tracing or wax paper between it and the art. Results may vary!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-Dana-Simpson-Phoebe-Unicorn/153839729862?hash=item23d18ffcc6:g:AQAAAOSwlBBeTutd

Next is a piece by The Norm cartoonist Michael Jantze! This ink and watercolor illustration by Jantze measures 5" x 7" so it’s rather small, but it's rendered beautifully, and is a great gag. I love these little conceptual mash-up pieces. I also like really small art. I can’t explain that, other than to say small art can frame up nicely and tuck into little places where art generally isn’t. I think that’s neat.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Michael-Jantze/153839733724?hash=item23d1900bdc:g:t14AAOSwsnVeTu0d

Onion & Pea cartoonists Jose Villena and David Tomaselli created what looks to be an ink and marker illustration that measures 8" x 12"

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-Villena-Tomaselli-Onion-Pea/153839748115?hash=item23d1904413:g:G2YAAOSwPYpeTvJx

That's what we have this week. We’re about 1/2 way through. Coming up in the next month are great pieces by Mo Willems, Riley Rossmo, Patrick McDonnell and more! Thanks again for your bids.

We had a good week last week. The result on the Conley artwork was incredible. Thanks so much to the bidders and to Felix and Aaron! We have six auctions this week

First is a piece by Riley Rossmo, the artist and co-creator of Image Comics titles COWBOY NINJA VIKING, PROOF, GREEN WAKE, DRUMHELLAR, BEDLAM, and RASPUTIN. You know Riley from his frequent stint as cover artist for DC, Valiant, and Boom and his recent MARTIAN MANHUNTER book. Riley's also done some work on the Batman titles, BATMAN/THE SHADOW, and THE BATMAN WHO LAUGHS. Felix Comic Art and Riley came through with this killer piece for us. Riley delivered something akin to the commissions he does with Felix, a nice 11” x 17” piece on comic artboard. This is one more of just a few pieces we've got this time by comic book artists, so jump on it.

Next up is a piece by March trilogy artist Nate Powell . Nate and John Lewis’ created a trilogy that will resonate for years to come. Nate stands out as the first cartoonist ever to win the National Book Award. He’s also received the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the Michael L. Printz Award, two Ignatz Awards! Did I mention an Eisner? Yeah, he’s got one of those as well. This piece is a big 9 x 14, and is ink and watercolor.

Carolyn Belefski creates and publishes original comics and illustrations, including her comic strip, Curls. She is artist of the comic books Black Magic TalesFrench Fry Club, and The Legettes. Carolyn has served on the National Cartoonists Society Board of Directors and works on Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time comic book as well. This 9 x 13 piece is ink and some spot color in marker.

Robert Pollak’s illustrations appeared in various magazines and newspapers over the years. He has contributed art to Red Stylo Media’s Shakespeare Shaken, Unfashioned Creatures (Frankenstein) and Killer Queen anthologies. Robert was one of a number of artists that created a limited edition homage comic book for Bill Woggon’s 1945 Katy Keene called The Pin-Up Parade, and later a comic book titled Mermaids, Vixens, and Wenches. In 2012 Robert started his own newspaper comic strip, Ellen’s Adventures at the Shadowland. This piece is pen and ink and measures 11 x17

Ray Friesen is best known for the 'Pirate Penguin vs Ninja Chicken' series, and 'Fairy Tales I Just Made Up!', as well as the graphic novel adaptation of the DiscworldTM novel 'Small Gods' by Terry Pratchett.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Ray-Friesen/153847542649?hash=item23d2073379:g:mqQAAOSw3sNeWDKz

Ellen Liebenthal is a professional graphic designer in the fabric industry. She’s also a professional cartoonist, illustrator, and writer. Her book Dan Harmon Please Hire Me, highlights the first 500 characters she created for her 1000characters project. She also creates Instant Nut Comics online.

Another week of auctions are up on eBay, as we quickly approach the end of our benefit. I believe there are 3 more weeks worth of art and the show will be hanging and open to the public as of this Monday. I’ll post photos when I get over there later next week. If you’d like to preorder a catalog, call the museum and ask for Summerlea, she is starting pre-sales this week. The Hellboy catalog sold out in less than a month, so if you want one, I would pre-order it. I’ll be designing it with Ryan Graff again, like the Colan, Hellboy and Sam Kieth catalogs that we’ve done. It will be a nice one, and it will be 4-color. Order one today!

We have four auctions this week

First is a piece by Jonathan Lemon, the artist behind Ally Oop and Rabbits against Magic. The image is 11 x 14, and features a meeting between C&H and Ally Oop.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Jonathan-Lemon/153854950719?hash=item23d2783d3f:g:pDAAAOSwZRFeYYhb

Next up is a piece by Where’s the Penguin artist Chuck Whelon. This piece is a big 9 x 12.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Chuck-Whelon/153854952760?hash=item23d2784538:g:h9kAAOSwGVVeYYuz

My buddy Scott Hanna did a nice acrylic painting for us this time (he was there for us with our Hellboy auctions too, Scott and his wife Pam are great supporters of the museum,) and it’s a big one, 12 x 16. Scott and I used to live next to one another in the dormitory at Pratt. I have stories. He has stories. We had a blast there and Scott has really made quite a career for himself at Marvel and DC, working on titles we used to trudge through the snow to get at Forbidden Planet. This was back when it actually snowed in NYC, instead of the rain. I love this piece, Scott really came through for us again.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Scott-Hanna/153854955943?hash=item23d27851a7:g:bUsAAOSwkfVeYYzj

Mo Williems' illustrations don’t really need much by the way of introduction. Everyone knows the Pigeon books. Try to find art by Mo out there, I have and I will tell you it isn’t easy. This is your best bet to get something by Mo, and it’s for a great cause! Calaphant and Hogges is one of my favorites this time around. I’ve gotten a lot of emails through CAF to let people know when this one was live. It’s going to go big. So, Bid, bid, bid!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Mo-Willems/153854943653?hash=item23d27821a5:g:Gz4AAOSw86ZeYYbi

Thanks again for your support of the Cartoon Art Museum!

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all safely sheltering in place and taking good care of one another. The museum has been closed for the past 3 weeks now, as that was what local health officials advised. The show has been up, and was probably only live for a few days when we got the shelter in place order. We’ll probably extend it once this is over, to give everyone a chance to see it that wants to. Unfortunately, I didn’t get photos of it, but have asked around because I am sure someone did.

We took a brief hiatus, once the Shelter in Place order went through, but have resumed auctions this week. We’re also taking pre-orders for the catalog, that I’ll be designing again with Ryan Graff. If you’ve gotten our Colan, Sandman, Hellboy or Sam Kieth catalogs in the past, you’ll know what you are getting. Hellboy sold out very quickly, in less than 2 weeks. We should have printed more! We do still have the rest, but those numbers are dwindling, and these things do not go back to press.

So, if you want one, the museum can ship them as soon as we open again, and frankly, we really could use the help. So if there is someone in the art collecting community you need a gift for, please consider a catalog! You can pre-order it here:

https://www.cartoonart.org/boyandhistiger

The catalog has not gone to press yet, but will in the coming weeks, and it will ship around the time that the winners receive their pieces, in a few months.

We have two auctions this week:

First up is a piece by cartoonist Jon "Bean" Hastings. This incredible tribute to Spaceman Spiff is a  mixed media wall sculpture, combining wood, acrylic, and paint (airbrush and pen, if you want to get technical) and measures 14" x 18"! It’s really cool, and the acrylic is used to show the path Spaceman Spiff has travelled. I’ve see it, had the pleasure of trying to figure out how to photograph it (ha) and can tell you it would look great on your wall.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Jon-Bean-Hastings/153859123309?hash=item23d2b7e86d:g:6fkAAOSwTr9eZtJC

Next up is a piece by award-winning cartoonist Stacy Curtis. This great ink and watercolor illustration measures 8.5" x 10.5"! Stacy has illustrated several children's books including "The Seven Habits of Happy Kids" written by Sean Covey, the Raymond and Graham chapter book series written by Mike Knudson, the Meghan Rose series written by Lori Z. Scott, "Snack Attack" written by Stephen Krensky and many others. He also creates hand-pulled screen-printed movie posters, gig-posters and art prints through his company, Mile 44

Thanks again for helping us out in this difficult time for non-profits, and please take care.

Hello again,

I hope everyone had a great Easter or is continuing to have a nice Passover, whichever you celebrate. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to secure any photos of the exhibit, we didn't think to capture it before we had to shelter in place. I will share one piece that is in our permanent collection that is in the C&H exhibit,  though. Sorry, it isn't up for auction! But, it's worth checking out the show just to see this original, it's a beaut. We also have a few more eBay auctions up currently, I’ll do a post about them later tonight. If anyone out there took photos, please feel free to post them here. As I said, we’ll try to keep it up a bit longer so those who want to see it, can. Thanks again for the support!

OK, so two auctions this week-- the first is by Filipe Andrade, who you'll know from those great commissions he does for Felix Comic Art, as well as some of his Marvel books-- Captain America, Wolverine and Black Widow among others. Filipe did a cool homage to a popular Watterson Sunday. I recognized it immediately, and it is the sort of thing he does very well in his commissions. Filipe is a true Watterson fan, and this piece shows it. I'll link to the original Calvin and Hobbes Sunday as well so you can see the inspiration. This piece is mixed media, and it measures about 5 x 7.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Filipe-Andrade/153892167220?hash=item23d4b01e34:g:2ZUAAOSwyIlejq0O

Our second piece is really interesting. It's by Colleen Doran, the creator behind the award winning "A Distant Soil," but she'S worked on so much that it would take half this page to list much of it. Recently her adaptation for Neil Gaiman's "Snow, Glass Apples" was nominated for a Stoker and a Rondo. If you are a horror fan like me, you know those are hard to come by. This drawing is done in liquid charcoal, and it's 11x14. A really interesting depiction of C&H!

These close in a few days, and these auctions like all auctions I suppose, tend to pop near the end. I've gotten a number of emails from collectors who were bummed that they were outbid last minute, so throw down if you want one! Thanks again for your support of CAM!

*FOR THOSE SKIMMERS OUT THERE (you know who you are!) I'M GOING TO MENTION THAT THE C&H SUNDAY DEPICTED BELOW IS NOT AT AUCTION, IT'S JUST TO SHOW FILIPE'S INSPIRATION.  :)

We're back with three auctions this week. First up is a piece by Karen Luk his delightful ink and watercolor illustration by Luk measures 8" x 8" and is mixed media.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-Art-Museum-original-art-Calvin-and-Hobbes-by-Karen-Luk/153900257470?hash=item23d52b90be:g:OZ4AAOSwvGxemMGW

Next is another great piece by Steve Purcell Steve is a long time friend of the museum, and did a piece for our Hellboy auction a few years ago as well. This delightful acrylic painting by measures 7" x 10" and it is really something to see in person, the scan does it no justice. Steve, as you know if the creator of Sam & Max, an Eisner winner, and behind a Pixar films like Cars, and more. Be fast on this one, it’s going to do well.

Finally, here’s another cartoonist you don’t see doing a lot of commissions. Lynn Johnston.  She’s a Reuben award-winner for her strip, For Better or For Worse and her ink and colored pencil illustration by measures 9" x 11" This will be another one that will jump considerably at the end, so watch it closely.
