Popular Post Robot Man Posted January 7, 2020 Popular Post Share Posted January 7, 2020 This one pops to mind right away. My uncle gave me a small pile of his ECs when I was about 10 or 11. I had read some of DC' s tamer horror stuff but these books blew my mind. I had only read a few so wasn't real aware of the "snap endings" This is "Judgement Day" from Weird Fantasy #18. A classic piece written by Al Feldstein and rendered by Joe Orlando. A spaceship from Earth lands on a planet being considered to join the Federation. It is inhabinated by blue and orange robots. Basically the blue robots do all the work and live in a run down part of town. The orange robots dominate life on this planet. The orange robots give the earthman a tour of their planet. He decides they are not ready to be considered. I wasn't expecting the last panel at all. This story was so important they reprinted it as their last thumb of the nose to the Comics Code on the way out. EC's we not all about horror and gore (although they did it about the best of anybody). Their stores often packed a message. She was right on this one. "Carrion Death" from Shock Suspenstories #9. A police officer is taking a criminal in to jail and traveling across the desert. They are hand cuffed together. The crook causes a crash. The cop is killed. He then realizes the key went flying off in the crash so he is forced to drag the cops corpse around with him. Buzzards feast on it when he is asleep. The last panel is one of the creepiest endings I have ever read in a horror comic. Brings me right back to 10 years old reading under the covers with a flashlight and hearing the wind outside and the house creaking... But both are deep-seated core soul-satisfying for me on several levels. Loved everything about both of these two issues... and I especially remember Spidey putting up that web hammock and waiting to see if Harry was actually the new Goblin... and then he appears in that glorious splash. And with the annual? To finally see Spidey with the Avengers? Like THAT... even though you know it will go so wrong moments later? It's so so good. This is a close second from one of the first books I bought at the LCS as a kid. This is around the time I'd just started learning who Mcfarlane was. Only time he really got into drawing Goblin due to being written off the story in the 80s. To balance out, the Adams panels (and splash pages) that blew me away when I first saw them in the 70s... Sometimes a comic book is so good and has such an influence on you that you can't pick just one panel, especially when the art's up at this level, and it's so definitive for a character.
