What is Color Guide Art ?

Just like their original art counterpart color guides are a unique, one-of-a-kind, item and were a key part in the production process of comics until the early 2000's when the process became computerized.

Color guides are a copy of the original art that was hand-painted by the colorist. There are sometimes hand-written notes from the artist or inker on mood or tone required, which shows how the finished comic artwork evolved through production.

This color guide was then used in the color separation process to create the proofs. Some pages have color "codes" written on them to depict the actual color used for that part of the page or notes from the colorist to the separators. Others will either not have the codes or they will be on a separate overlay. The dimensions for colorist art are primarily 8.5" X 11".
