Marvel Television Has Been Rebranded Now That Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Is In Charge

Quote

The launch of Disney+ means that Marvel Studios is taking charge of the company's future small screen stories and it was recently confirmed that Kevin Feige will oversee movies, television, and comic books from a creative standpoint moving forward. That means the likes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Cloak & Dagger are being replaced by high concept shows such as WandaVision and What If?.

In the press release announcing the cast of M.O.D.O.K., Marvel Television is referred to as Marvel TV Studios, a rebranding for this division of Marvel Entertainment which ties it closer to Marvel Studios (Marvel Film Studios? Marvel Movie Studios?).

It also includes a quote from Karim Zreik, credited as the SVP, Original Programming & Production for Marvel TV Studios. He held that same position in the Marvel Television days but him receiving a mention is noteworthy because it was previously Jeph Loeb who would comment on news like this. Clearly, Zreik is now in charge as the former Marvel Television head's time starts winding down.

A long list of mistakes have been made during Loeb's time in that role and it's hard to escape the feeling that these characters will be better off with Feige keeping a close eye on things.

Some bias in that article, as under Jeph Loeb you had Daredevil, The Punisher, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Cloak and Dagger, Legion, The Gifted, Agent Carter, Agents of SHIELD.

Marvel TV Overhauls Creative Approach After Major Daredevil Setback

Quote

Marvel Studios is making some sweeping changes to how they make television after some recent setbacks with Daredevil: Born Again. A new piece from The Hollywood Reporter says that the company is re-evaluating basically the entire Disney+ TV wing of their operation. After letting go of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, the also parted ways with the directors of Daredevil: Born Again. Now, Marvel Studios is reported to be leaning more heavily on TV showrunners for their upcoming titles. Previously, Marvel used film executives to run its series. That caused problems as fans and critics wanted more interconnectivity, and at the same time more time with the characters. The limited series model seems to be on-hold for the moment as everything gets retooled.

When asked about showrunners, Marvel's head of streaming Brad Winderbaum said, "It's a term we've not only grown comfortable with but also learned to embrace… We need executives that are dedicated to this medium, that are going to focus on streaming, focus on television, because they are two different forms."

The Daredevil revamp is the latest in a series of growing pains for Marvel television. Since debuting the Emmy-winning WandaVision in January 2021, the studio, which dominated the film industry in the 2010s, has released more than 50 hours of TV programming after creating a small-screen division from the ground up during the pandemic.

Through it all, the company eschewed the traditional TV-making model. It didn’t commission pilots but instead shot entire $150 million-plus seasons of TV on the fly. It didn’t hire showrunners, but instead depended on film executives to run its series. And as Marvel does for its movies, it relied on postproduction and reshoots to fix what wasn’t working.

Even though they remain, along with Star Wars titles, the most watched shows on Disney+, Marvel series have recently faced a number of creative challenges and cries of diminishing returns from critics and audience metrics, causing a major shift at the studio to move to make TV shows the more traditional way.
