Maybe it has to do with age.  My age    There was a time when the covers were 100% art , besides the titles, price and number and publisher logo.  

Then the book price started creeping up.  FAST.  12c went to 15c which soon went to 20c then to 25c to 30c etc.    

When the bar code came in after years of pure clean artwork...….  I just disliked it.

I lived through that horrible transition as well.  Simply a tragic time for all of us.  Uggh.

If it happened today one could reasonably predict a spike in shrink visits with collector-friendly therapists - but we were made of tougher stuff back then.
