Do you really nead “officials” boxes to store your comic books?

I put my comics in boxes that contained detergent bottles because it’s the perfect size (they are obviously clean). Is there a problem with using random boxes for your comics, or does “official” boxes made for comics have some advantages that are  worth investing in?

Need? No. The Edward Edgar Church (Mile High) Collection was stored with "raw" comics stacked on top of one another, stored in brown paper bags. However, any box is better than no box for safety/insurance's sake, IMHO, and while I would personally prefer boxes that didn't have other chemicals stored inside them first, if that is all you have, then again, it's better than nothing.

The big preferences of purpose-made boxes are the lids and handles. I think you can get some "acid-free" storage boxes but will pay extra for them.

Take of this what you will.

No, it just needs to be clean, for me.

You probably wouldn’t approve of my set up. I prefer comic boxes For obvious reasons but I’ve photographed some of my repurposed boxes. I especially like the legal size file box. Stores high grade Warren magazines!

Dayum. lol

I don't mind reusing boxes. I have some stacks in similar situations. I wouldn't use anything stained, though. Not that I have anything raw that's really that valuable anyways. lol

it helps for longevity to have acid free boxes or ones that are free of chemicals as they can leach into the books and cause damage.. I mean if they are 50 cent books and aren't valuable a regular acide free box which is a couple of bucks doesn't sound to bad also makes it easier to lift etc.. choice is yours.

But I hate to be that guy who had a 1$ comic and 5 -10 years later prices go up etc.. and because I didn't take care of it I just lost quite a bit of money years down the road which I could of spend 5-9$ on a box...

If your books are put in a bag with a acid-free board, what does it matter what type of box you put them in?  Granted, you don't want a box that is shorter than the height of a comic book and anything you stack on top of it starts bending the comics...

I suppose if you are really nuts about it, you'd need to alternate the stacking of the spines and keep them flat in vertical piles of no more that ten.

I think its more important to change out your bags every few years f you're using the basic junk ones.   Those breakdown.   There are a couple of dealers I buy from every year whose bags are so soft and yellow it's kind of gross.   The books are always fine but that can't be good for the books to sit in them for too long.

I use Mylites and I store about 40% of my personal collection of books in old Canada Dry crates-- they are wood and hold the books nicely.  The rest of my collection is in short comic boxes for neatness.

Detergent boxes are crazy solid boxes I'd just make sure there is no residue in them-- those bottles leak sometimes.
