I asked him the very same thing, he said CGC would honor Creators request

You would think they would have cleared this with the artist before the big reveal?  Sounds like some more negotiations behind the scene.

Probably got hurt with all the attention Todd was getting on his recent in house signing.  There was some rumors he was going to be the next guy in line for a similar signing.  He can kiss that goodbye if he is serious about this.

With deadpool I agree. Fabian should get most of the credit as well as the later writers who fleshed out the character. I couldn't take looking at the cover art of nm98 anymore so I sold it. I have a much better deadpool comic to me written by rick remender, drawn by clayton crain and signed by Fabian.

He has a point though - during the McFarlane signing, Todd announced that there were certain books that he would not sign despite him saying that he would sign any book featuring a character that he created.   What was the reason by the way that Todd would not sign these books?

From what I remember it was because he didn't want to support the practice of the ridiculous ratio variants like 1:1000 and 1:2000 stuff.

 

The Spawn Retailer incentive was because these were given to the stores for free.

Do these clowns all want to be Federal Reserve Chairman or something? One person cannot dictate the entire economy surrounding the business and hobby. With all due respect to sig collectors (enjoy the hobby as you like) I'm personally at 180 degrees from any perspective that could make me want to stand in line at a cattle call to hand over cash for a stranger (who may or may not be a nice person) to sign my item. I've long ago divorced my enjoyment of creators' material from fanhood of the people themselves because for all I know, if I were to have a meaningful conversation with a given creator, we could either connect OR find ourselves diametrically opposed on everything under the sun. I can support their work by buying and enjoying their work, but I personally have decided I like it better to remain strangers, especially if I have to pay to meet them.

McFarlane's example seems to be in opposition to a practice he probably thinks is detrimental to the business, and I can see that. But then either take the check to do the job or just don't participate. To assume that anyone in line with a 1 in a bajillion variant (why did you take a check to draw it???) is a "greedy flipper" or somesuch rather than a fan who actually cherishes the work is a bit heavy-handed.

To ask for an autograph at a chance encounter, after a brief meaningful connection, out of mutual respect and admiration for a creator is a compliment to the creator, in my eyes. To stand in line for hours with a stack, no matter how much profit is involved for both sides, strikes me as demeaning to both parties. Maybe there's another side to sig lines that I'm missing, but without seeing it I can't get past the feeling of subservience at the idea of waiting around to pay someone 50 bucks to write their name, no matter how much I like their creations, or how much profit may be involved -- especially if there's no chance to make a real connection, the only thing that for me could infuse the signature with meaning.
