Scooby Doo Gold Key Comic run

I've considered it but for me it comes down to too expensive and too hard to find in high grade. Besides, the real time to collect these was 25/30+ years ago when nobody cared about them. That train has left the station.

Probably should clarify:  the Gold Key run I’m contemplating is Star Trek, although everything you said probably applies to that as well.

Most likely have to make some serious concessions on grade with the photo cover issues.

I’d actually say cheap and of medium effort.

I used to think like you about 10 years ago and I’m not saying the set is super easy to put together, I don’t think it’s really that hard either just takes a bit of time. But then if you can complete it really does give you a nice sense of accomplishment. As for prices I still think these are some of the cheapest, books out there given their popularity of the characters. It will be interesting to see what the Scooby Doo movies do to add interest if they do a few of them over the next 5-6 years too.

What a great thread and what a great set!!

I think a 9.8 Scooby-Doo 1 would challenge the prices of a 35 cent 9.8 SW1 or 9.8 IH 181.

Discuss.

When the lone Star Trek 1 9.8 sold for $40k, I see no reason if a lone Scooby #1 surfaces in 9.8 getting the 40-50K range.

I’m a big scooby doo and smurfs fan.  Growing up in the 80’s those 2 were my 2 must watch cartoons.  Do you ever see a Spirou 1071 (1st smurfs) CGC 9.8 ever reaching $50,000; highest one on the census is a lone 9.6

Kind of inspires me to get more series about a Gold Key run of my own.

Well, if it's a Gold Key run you are looking at, the one that I would go after would be the Total War / M.A.R.S. Patrol run.  :luhv:

Fantastic storyline and I am actually surprised that they haven't turned that one into a si-fi TV series or something along that line.  hm

Well, here's always hoping!!!  :wishluck:

I would say Star Trek and Scooby Doo are the gold in these gold key books. Both have great fandoms. The key (no pun intended) is finding both sets in high grade as it seems both sets were loved and well read.

Personally, if you gave me a choice, I would much rather go with Fred and Barney in terms of The Flintstones over something like Scooby Doo.  hm

Scooby Doo is like Spider-Man for the young generation.

Flintstones = Superman

Well, if that is indeed the case, then since Action 1 is still valued at a higher price point than 'Tec 27, shouldn't a book like Dell Giant #48 (i.e. 1st comic book appearance of The Flintstones) from 1961 be valued at a higher price point than the first comic book appearance of Scooby Doo in 1970?  hm  (shrug)

Interesting choice.  As a kid, I enjoyed watching their cartoon re-reruns, and the first live action movie was...tolerable, the second one not so much.  But since then, they've really dropped off of people's radar and its been very, very quiet regarding new product or any news that would make folks clamour for Flintstone back-issues...that's 20 years of virtual silence for a once-mighty franchise.

Additionally, the 1st Flintstones comic was part of a large warehouse find which included many high grade copies so that's also kept a damper on price.

If you like the Flintstones and want to complete a high grade run, its fairly inexpensive, and much easier to achieve than Scooby Doo, but Scooby Doo is just starting to get the recognition it deserves, being on the forefront of Gold Key's (and Marvel, DC, etc) most viable properties over the past 50 years, and it still has a long way to go to hit its true place/pricing in the market

Sadly, I suspect that most younger people and kids know the Flintstones more from cereal commercials than they do from the actual cartoon show. On the other hand, Scooby Doo has been almost continually in the pop culture mainstream since it debuted in 1969. That's why Scooby Doo is greater than Flintstones.

I love the Flintstones and would love to see that property rise to the level of Scooby Doo but it ain't there right now.

As a life long Scooby fan, I'm in awe. Never thought I'd see so many 9.8's in one spot. I'm hoping to have Mark Evanier sign four Mark Jeweler Scooby Variants later in the year....if the con isn't cancelled the is.

Good luck with upgrading!

Well it took me a decade but I finally finished off the run of the Scooby Doo gold key comics set on the registry.

I hope you enjoy the run as much as I did collecting them. Scooby is clearly my favorite cartoon and the comic books are fun to chase down!

That's a fantastic collection! Coincidentally, I've started collecting this run as well! I'd like to keep all the books in a closed range, a range of 6.0 to 7.0. Do you have any duplicate graded books in the this range, or raw books that might grade in this range, or if you may have a connection to someone selling some books?

Thanks for your time,

Chris

Would be nice if Dell Giant 48 (aka Flintstones #1) had even 1/4 of the interest as GK Scooby 1.

I picked up this raw from JHV at a con in the late 90's. I was one of the first graded by CGC and for short time the only 9.6 with none higher.

Still have the reading copy I found 10 years prior as a kid in my LCS'  4/$1 bins. Love how they are drawn like they looked in the first season of the show.
