shadroch Posted February 27, 2020 Share Posted February 27, 2020 (edited) I'm sorry, but the reasons most comic shops in San Francisco went under had less to do with speculation and more to do with rising rents. Shop owners were priced out. On the other hand, I definitely want some of whatever he has been smoking. I see a retailer who has been in the business 35 years pleading with people to stop destroying the artform. Speculation on brand new books has resulted in a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of readers left. The artform is being destroyed by jags who run into a store to scoop up all available issues to sell to other idiots online. It wasn't so bad when there are available copies for readers to buy. But it's been virtually impossible for over 20 years now, because of the tight ordering required to stay afloat. If you're buying something brand new to flip online, denying a reader the chance to obtain it, you're contributing to the problem. Not sorry if that offends people. People in the 90s lost everything...sometimes due to their own mistakes and stupidity, sometimes not...because the buying public treated all new comics like potential goldmines, like the latest hot piece of kitsch from the Franklin Mint. It hasn't changed. You want to speculate on new books? Put your damn order in with Diamond. The FOC is now a mere three weeks before publication. Then all the variants that started a flood just contribute to the issue. In order to get Hell Arisen 3 from him I have to buy 1 and 2? OK. I'm out $15. I'll sell the sets for $45. I'd like to nine times my money, but tripling my money is fine too. My solution? Last week I called my LCS, Ultimate Comics Durham/Chapel Hill in North Carolina, to ask if by any 'conceivable' chance they had any extra copies of "Hell Arisen" # 3 that they could put in my pull box. I spoke with Matt who said they would if they could, and although I appreciated the sentiment and response, I did not think for a second they would have any extra copies with the incredible hype this book has received, and with the very short notice I gave. But, there it was this morning, and in perfect condition! With stories of so many stores stashing speculative books away to sell on-line at inflated prices, I wanted to give a shout out to Ultimate Comics for being so nice to their customers; Excelsior! It hasn't changed. Speculators who get into something solely to exploit it for financial gain will inevitably due serious damage to the market in question, if not out-and-out ruin it. They are objectively bad for the it's long term health. How many times does this -script need to play out before people wake up? It's not just moderns either. Some sheeple chasing top golden age issues and keys have started shifting their dumb money into sealed video games, with predictable results. As a shop owner you should be wishing that this sort of thing happens more often and work on turning the temporary customer into someone who returns. Or I suppose you can just take the holier than now attitude about how only die hard fans should be allowed to shop in your store....tell me how that works out for you in the long run.... And he's really only railing against human nature. If there's a way to make a buck, people will do it whatever the medium. Lots of ways to make a buck with comics, many of which can appear 'unseemly'. If you queue up to get your favourite artist to sign one book, because you love their work, you're a fan.
