How do you determine if a comic is Newsstand? 0

I'm sure this is a really basic question but I see some comics with the barcode on the front and they say Newsstand and cost much more. I thought the bar code was the thing that makes it Newsstand but I've seen others with the barcode not specified as newsstand. Any help in understanding this designation is appreciated.

For the books that have barcodes on both direct and newsstand editions,  I think a 5 digit secondary barcode means direct.  Whereas a newsstand will only have 2 digits on the second barcode.
