With the release of new Hollywood films rapidly approaching, AMC has announced that it will open 100 of its over 600 U.S.-based theaters next Thursday, August 20. As part of a promotion celebrating AMC’s centennial, taking place this year, all tickets on opening day will be sold for 15 cents (plus sales tax).

 

The 15-cent pricing promotion, called “Movies in 2020 at 1920 Prices,” will be paired with social distancing measures keeping auditoriums at significantly reduced capacity. Other safety protocols are detailed here, as part of AMC’s Safe & Clean program. These include a mask requirement for staff and guests (except when eating), cashless transactions, a temporary hold on popcorn and Coca-Cola refills, and a simplified menu.

 

“We are thrilled to once again open our doors to American moviegoers who are looking for an opportunity to get out of their houses and apartments and escape into the magic of the movies,” said AMC CEO Adam Aron. “As our guests return on our first day of resumed operations on August 20, we invite them to join us in celebrating a return to the movies, and in celebrating 100 years of AMC making smiles happen with movies at 1920 prices of only 15 cents each.”

 

Additional promotions AMC plans to launch at reopened theaters include $5 titles on repertory titles, $5 concessions deals, and double points on ticket and concessions purchases for AMC Stubs loyalty members through the end of October.

Yes - just remember that each movie is "targeted" toward the age of Harry Potter in the movie.

1st movie is for 11-year-old children, 2nd is for 12-year-olds, etc.

The back-half of the Harry Potter franchise is still very good. The first couple of movies are very boring in hindsight.

Dylan O'Brien's new movie Love and Monsters (previously titled Monster Problems) will skip theaters in favor of PVOD, and moves up its release date to this year. Love and Monsters joins a long list of movies that have opted for a debut at home instead of waiting to arrive in theaters. Movie theaters around the country closed earlier this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it remains unclear when they will reopen everywhere.

 

As a result of the pandemic, Love and Monsters distributor Paramount opted for the VOD release for some films, like Blue Story. Other, more blockbuster worthy movies like A Quiet Place Part II and Top Gun: Maverick were delayed to next year for theatrical releases. Now it seems Paramount has opted to not delay Love and Monsters beyond its 2021 release date and instead moves the film up to an earlier debut - but on premium on-demand.

 

Per Deadline, Love and Monsters will now release at home on October 16, moving up four months from its previous February 12, 2021 date. Love and Monsters will follow the standard model set up for movies skipping theaters. It will be available for 48 hours and adhere to the $19.99 price most studios have set for their PVOD titles. The movie will also be available for purchase for $24.99. Paramount decided on this move due to the demand for new material, while people are largely still staying home. The studio's Chief Operating Officer Andrew Gumpert told Deadline, "Given the demand for new, high-quality entertainment right now, Paramount has decided to release Love and Monsters widely on digital platforms." In his statement, Gumpert assured everyone at Paramount is eager for movie theaters to reopen, but wanted to make their new movie available right now for content-craving moviegoers at home.

The number of feature film production in South Korea dropped in the first eight months, as the coronavirus disrupted travel, commerce and finance.

 

According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the number of films made dropped from 23 between January and August last year, to just 18 in 2020.

 

The country was one of the first to be hit by the virus outbreak, but with the exception of a few notable hot spots, seemed to have good success at quashing the spread of the disease through widespread testing, aggressive contact tracing and largely closed borders.

 

That seeming success allowed several productions to start or re-start, and Netflix executives at in April said that Korea was only one of three places in the world where it was able to shoot. And cinemas reopened.

 

Fantasy film “Wonderland,” directed by Kim Tae-yong and starring Gong Yoo and Tang Wei, began shooting in April. Disaster film “Emergency Declaration,” starring Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun, began in May.

 

But since then further outbreaks have occurred causing new impact to the film and TV industries. KOFIC said that no films started production in June, and only three, including the crime thriller “Limit,” began in July and August. It also reported that “Emergency Declaration” had been shut down after a staff member was revealed to have contracted the disease on Aug. 31. Among the titles currently delaying their start is “Apgujeong Report” starring Ma Dong-seok.

 

South Korea reported 126 new infections on Friday, bringing its cumulative total to 22,783. The government has tightened distancing guidelines, banning indoor gatherings of 50 or more people and outdoor events with 100 or more. With the upcoming Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holidays coming at the end of the month, there is fear of another wave of infection.

 

That fear recently caused the Busan International Film Festival to delay its start by two weeks. All being well, it will now run Oct. 21-30.

Everyone *knows* there's a pandemic. It's okay to admit that Tenet will lose money -- or that perhaps it shouldn't have had a theatrical release this early.

The actor has recommenced filming on his upcoming Netflix movie Red Notice on Monday, his producing partner and longtime friend Hiram Garcia told Variety. Johnson’s return to work comes after the actor recovered from a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, alongside his wife, Lauren Hashian, and their two young daughters: Jasmine, 4, and Tiana, 2.

 

“It’s been an incredible process and undertaking to get a production up-and-running,” Garcia told Variety. “Netflix has had the attitude that whatever it will take to keep things safe for the crew, they are 100% behind [it].”

 

He continued, “We had finished half the movie and then the pandemic hit, so we re-adjusted what we needed to, so that we could finish everything on stages and wrap up the movie.”
