A couple of cool Atlas River City books I got yesterday.

I managed to get a second copy of one of my favorite Atlas books.  I don't know if there's another that's as good from cover to cover.  Start with a knockout Heath cover, then open with a rare Everett western story, then Crandall, Powell, and Torres.  And none of them mailed it in, each one is outstanding in its own right.

"social distancing" post of the day.  I wanted to share this cover due to it being one of my favorite Maneely's.  I'll be honest, he's not my favorite Atlas artist.  I definitely appreciate him, but I don't seek him out as much as others.  That being said, wow did he knock it out of the park on this one.  The colors and the big hammer and sickle just add to the awesomeness.  

 

Flipping through it, I saw an artist I didn't recognize, Tom Scheuer.  Turns out he did a number of jobs for Atlas, but most of them were in romance or text illustrations.  He did a handful of war stories, all in this title.  As you can see, the art is pretty outstanding with clean linework and well laid out panels. 

I looked into Scheuer and he's still around and switched to writing Hollywood scripts.  I wonder if he would be willing to talk about his time at Atlas?
