my daughter is 20 and my parents were flying her down to Florida to spend time with them for Spring Break next week. Daughter was ready to go no matter what, but recognized that she didn't want to live her whole life with the idea she killed grammy and grampy! Low probability, yes, but risk vs reward says stay home.

Now I have to drive to brooklyn and pick her up next Monday or Tuesday. It is going to be like Escape from New York and I am Snake Plissken!

ya and I get it lol it's going to be mirky for a while...

While I personally came to this thread to stop the :ohnoez: there is cause for concern FOR SURE! (thumbsu

Personally I think we're past containment, but if this stall gives the health system time to provide care, I'm for whatever is necessary!

Concern but not panic.   Terry's close-- there were 60 million people infected with the Swine flu in 2009 resulting in 275,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 deaths.   The Swine Flu first appeared in April but was not declared a threat until 1000 Americans had died by October.  Where was the panic then?   If that doesn't speak to you then you aren't paying attention.   This is not the plague, this is not ebola, this is not even the Swine Flu.    Wash your hands, avoid sick people, if you're sick stay home.   Wash your hands again.   Get a grip on yourself.

I think you're missing something very important with your comparison.

Yes, 2009's swine flu was very widespread.  But that isn't the issue.

The issue is this:

2009's swine flu had a death rate of less than 0.1%.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_flu_pandemic) and (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html)

Today's corona virus has a death rate of about 3%.  That is about 30 TIMES the death rate of the 2009 swine flu.

THAT is what people are concerned about.  That once someone is infected, the chance of dying is so much higher.

Back in 2009, there was not that much concern about the swine flu because people knew that if they got it, they would probably get over it, just like the regular flu.  It would be a rotten experience, but only for a relatively short while.

But the corona virus fatality rate is much higher by comparison.

However, I do agree with you that panic is not helpful at all.

Precautions need to be taken, and many of them, but without panic.  After all, as China has shown, the outbreak CAN be contained.

Unfortunately, there are and will always be people whose self-interest (Terry) outweigh the greater good.  So be it.  He had an opportunity to do the right thing, but chose to call us all ignorant of the facts, because he clearly knows better than the doctors, virus specialists, governments and so on.

I think its only a matter of time before the State of California shuts down his convention anyhow.

Way to go, Terry! :tonofbricks:

I'd like to make it perfectly clear that my post was NOT about anyone specific.  I am not trying to malign anyone.  Far from it.

Everyone has different issues and motivations and interests, which is totally fine.  One can never fully appreciate another's ideas unless they are exactly in that other person's shoes.  And that is almost never completely possible.  I am not here to judge, at all.

I am simply providing data, which anyone may choose to reference, or not.

I work in numerous nursing homes / assisted living facilities in the same week. 4 to be exact. Had my temperature taken today to enter one facility. (I was allowed in and there was a questionnaire as well. and fact sheet provided) This is the new norm. The thermometer was laser beam but the woman holding it had to get her hand pretty close to my face. It is what it is. I have used more purell each day this week than in the decade prior. I am happy to be monitored as I do not want to get anyone else ill should I in fact get sick. My family also recognizes the importance of not getting me ill. I follow all the precautions and keep as far away as can be and still be heard but you have to get up close sometimes when a 97 year old person is talking to you. I am only going to one facility per day now as opposed to 2/3 in a day (which I might do to maximize timing and workload). It will all work out for the best, the stomach flu was just rampant in NJ and I did not get it despite 2 facilities I go to having multiple cases of it. My wife coughed last night and I was like "how long have you had that cough?" :ohnoez:  It was her only cough, or so she says. (Don't worry, I monitored throughout the night.)

Where I work we just finished QA on a new set of reports for literally these sort of outbreak/pandemics.  So that our agencies have something to use moving forward.  It is all about getting ahead of the wave instead of either behind it or in the middle of it.

This mass hysteria is definitely changing the healthcare industry for sure.

Fan Expo HQ announced today the cancellation of Toronto Comicon (March 20-22) and postponement of Fan Expo Dallas from March 27-29 to June 19-21 in accordance with local authorities and public health concerns to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Right now Megacon Orlando (April 16-19) and Calgary Expo (April 23-26) are being watched closely and we are working with local authorities in those areas. Should they need to be cancelled or postponed we will do so.

Got a call from my Diamond rep yesterday wanting to confirm shipping method on my FCBD books. She was completely caught off guard when I asked her why they weren't already postponing the event. I've already told my customers that we won't be doing FCBD in May. Most likely it will be until July or August.

But I got nothing but confusion when I asked the Diamond rep whether she thought it might be a PR disaster for the comic industry to be going ahead with plans to have 3,000 shops around the country each with 1,000+ people streaming in and out of it all in the same day. As though they'd not had a single internal discussion about "maybe FCBD shouldn't be in May this year".

Disney is planning to reopen April 1st. Baseball plans to start a couple weeks later. Megacon is clinging dearly to the idea their show will be fine. I think everyone expects this global pandemic to be over in two weeks. So of course nobody is freaking out about FCBD in MAY!

My inaugural Comic Book Meetup in a suburb of Vancouver, BC was small, well under 250 people, but Safeway Canada just cancelled ALL reserved or prepaid room bookings (including church/community events, birthday parties) from now to about April 30, 2020 due to Covid-19 fears and potential liability. Let's see if Canada cancels Church gatherings next week.

This is not good, if Calgary Expo should be cancelled to postponement in later dates. I would lose my airport ticket for that. 😬😵

Times are tough and will become tougher.

in order to prevent further spread of Covid-19, The CN Tower is closed, all government run March Break programs are closed, public libraries are closed and/or will close today, worship at churches are cancelled, Toronto Zoo is closed, hockey Hall of Fame is closed, Royal Ontario Museum is closed, along with the Art Gallery of Ontario, classes at Ontario’s two largest universities are cancelled and will be conducted online only.  Several other universities have also cancelled in-person classes, and many, may more cancellations too numerous to list here.

oh yeah, and as a preventative measure, Toronto’s mayor is in self isolation for the next two weeks because he recently returned from a trip to the UK

at least majority of the raptors players have tested negative specially with the bowling event they had after the game with the Jazz..

Trudeau is also in Self Isolation as his wife had tested positive as well.

Only thing is in the GTA at a local grocery store they had police controlling the crowd and creating a line allowing only 10 people at a time we waited maybe 25 mins to get into the store which is not to bad but the shelves are empty potatoes, carrots, onions, bread, chicken, soups, frozen fruits and veggies all empty and of course toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, and any type of wipes, disinfect sprays etc.. all gone and i was home yesterday and went around 2pm when its not as busy usually..

Everyone is holding food and supplies... I feel bad many who can't make it to the stores yet or the elderly are left picking the leftovers... hopefully they will restock soon.

We were scheduled to do a show this past weekend that the promoter was stubbornly not canceling despite everything else going on. We were pretty sure it would be canceled, but since it wasn’t as of Friday morning we made our way out there against our better judgement. We got fully loaded in and set up, and then 90 minutes before the doors were supposed to open it got canceled.
