What was the point to slabbing any of these? 3 3

I am sure there is nothing ground breaking in stating that sometimes (often?), getting a book slabbed is not worth it. We all have our reasons (mine is that when it comes to really pricey books, I like knowing exactly where my comic is valued at and the current collecting landscape with CGC grants that), but when looking at what some of these go for on the market, I really wonder what was the point of slabbing random books. Here are examples below of books all selling at either a loss or very marginal gains. Slabbing costs 20$ plus you have the shipping fees for both ways (or submitting at a con, which has it's own costs), plus invoice fees, taxes, and extra fees you may opt for (pressing/fast track). And then there's the fees related to selling (e-bay/paypal fees or consignment fees on auction sites). And of course, all this does not take how much the actual book cost into account, which could really amplify one's loss. At least selling a comic raw would minimize one's losses.

So, what was the point to slabbing any of these?

Because people don't understand basic economics or research the value and demand of books before slabbing them. They assume a high grade slabbed book is going to sell for a lot.

I probably wouldn't slab most of those issues without a 9.8 pre-screen. Heck, most of those I'd never slab even with a 9.8 pre-screen.

But I wouldn't kick the FF #161, Defenders #22, or even the Moon Knight #7 at CGC 9.6 out of bed.

Who buys a high grade slab of a nothing book?! To me paying $15-30 for a book you can get for $1-3 raw in similar condition is silly.

Unless of course you are putting together a graded run or something.

Exactly, that's what I was going to ask. Who is buying the random "nothing" graded books? I do see some weird instances at local auction houses that don't generally have comics where a nothing graded book in like 8.0 goes for $30. Maybe that's the angle of buying something cheap?  I get wanting a 9.8 run but yeah.... I don't know.

Maybe they are hoping to find a buyer who wants to crack it out for signature series? Such as the Defenders and have Joe Sinott sign the 9.6. 

Bought a 9.4 1990's power ranger book once slabbed, now it's signed by entire original cast and pressed to a 9.6. 

Everyone has a reason for slabbing.

It's my guess that someone tried to get 9.8s and decided to discard them at low prices.

The pre-screen is pretty expensive.  If it's not met with 9.8 exception, it's $5 per copy.

Sure, but its still sold at a loss so why even bother?
